Comment by Todd - June 21, 2005, 6:55 pmIf that comment is directed at ME, then I don't think it applies. I think I have shown the picture and stated that the husband is self-centered, which I do not believe is in doubt. (It is fact, based on action.) I am observing and pointing out poor behavior.

If 15 years of uncompromised care. a life of lost dreams and love, and incredable helplessness and loneliness is considered self-centered by someone, then, who is doing the judging?

I see your point, Todd. On the surface it appears you're right. But maybe it's a sort of sad statement to a dead woman. Maybe he promised to help her die. Maybe he promised he'd find someone else. Maybe he promised the wouldn't kill himself, or wouldn't kill some drunk driver who caused her a terminal injury.
I'll confess, when I saw it I reacted the same as you... something the other side of disgust. But after I thought on it a while I realized it might be a lot of other things, the most likely being a statement to a dead woman about something only the two of them shared.

Atlasshrugged, maybe I'm missing something here by not reading newspapers or watching TV. I get the impression there's a story here that's already known about what's on that grave marker?

I'll tell you, after I thought about this some more, not only do I feel as before (he's self-centered), but I also feel that's the statement of a guilty conscience. The autopsy confirmed that she had a strong heart, and if simply provided food and water, she would be alive today. Her family would have been happy to continue to care for her, so she should have been left in their care.
Comments on this are welcome here, of course, but those who have STRONG disagreements should probably write about it in their own Blog, rather than flaming me.

I hope you aren't interpreting my comments as flaming you. I'm not. I don't have a strong opinion, not much of a weak one. I don't know the story of this woman. I just saw the blog entry, read the inscription, and pondered what I was seeing. As I explained, I didn't realize there was more to the story, assuming there is.
However, if you'd prefer I don't comment on your blog, I'll oblige you.

Something in the heart of me says her hubby's actions were NOT altruistic throughout the entire time frame, and that her care should have been signed over to the ones who wanted to do it ... her parents. Given the efficacy of antibiotic resistent super bugs it probably wouldn't have been very long before she left anyway.
I feel the last line on the marker should not have been placed there as it was a message to her parents that he won, not to Terri. After all hubby had long since been playing house with someone else AND had children by her.
