Thanx for the post Rick. I rented that a few years ago to see it again. I assume you mean the remake with Richard Burton and John Hurt? I don't know if the original is available but I saw it in high school in the classroom's "Predictive Literature" English class after we read the book. I didn't have a clue then what was coming in real life or had already transpired for that matter. We also read "Brave New World" which they made into a movie and also we read "Player Piano" by Kurt Vonnegut. I'll have to check that last one out again since I can hardly remember it now but there must have been something to it predictive-wise. George Orwell was the pen name of an Englishman named Eric Blair. He was in the Imperial Police in Burma and later fought along side the Loyalists forces in the Spanish Civil War. He hated totalitarianism, was critical of communism but considered himself a socialist. This I got from the 1949 preface. I don't think he was writing to cheer on the elites although they do like to stick it in our face ahead of time to get their jollies and they do that sort of thing all the time of late. His book came out after WW2 and he must have had lots of nightmarish fertile storyline from that as well as his previous experiences. My favorite part of 1984 is the love story--against all odds. It's sad the way the couple related to each other later after brainwashing and confessing. I also relate to the part where they manage to get a bit of coffee, a small amount of chocolate and jam and relish it as that was me back in the day as a starving student,lol. But it my case it was having a Dr. Pepper and trail mix in the refrigerator!

No, haven't read that. There is a documentary on the web called "Orwell Rolls In His Grave".
