Getting Started

Installing and using the Lottery Results Gadget is simple!

  1. First, be sure your computer meets the basic requirements.  If you're new to Windows 7 or Windows Vista gadgets we'd recommend you review What is the Sidebar? and How to Install a Gadget before proceeding.
  2. After you install the Lottery Results Gadget into the Sidebar, click the small OptionsOptions icon to choose which lottery games you'd like to display.
  3. The latest results are instantly displayed, and monitoring for new results begins automatically — no registration necessary!
  4. Also in the Options panel, you can configure a variety of settings, including the gadget size, font size, and even a sound to play when new results arrive.
  5. An expanded view is available to see more detail, as well as links to game detail pages on the Web.  To see the expanded view, either drag the gadget onto the main desktop area, or click the Expand link.

Configuration Settings

The Options panel is the place where you have the power to change what games are displayed, and how the gadget looks and sounds.

You can access the Options panel by clicking the small OptionsOptions icon (see Working with gadgets for an illustration of the icon location.)

Each instance (copy) of the gadget in the Sidebar can have its own unique settings, so changing the settings in one gadget will not affect another.

Figure 1 illustrates the available configuration settings.  The descriptions below correspond to the numbered sections in the illustration.

Figure 1. Options panel.

Options Window

  1. Choose lottery games to display and monitor.
    1. When you first open the Options panel, the games list is refreshed, so you can select new games as soon as they are available.
    2. Make your choice in the Country drop-down box, and then all the games available in that country will fill the box beneath it.
    3. Move the games you wish to monitor to the box on the right.
    4. You may monitor as few or as many games as you wish.
    5. The game selection boxes support multiple item highlighting, as well as double-clicking.
  2. Sound to play when new results arrive.

The sound option will provide an audio alert when new results or jackpots are shown in the gadget display.  You can also choose to make the gadget silent.

Click Preview to hear the sound without making it your permanent choice.

  3. Docked gadget display options.

In Windows Vista, the two display options only affect the gadget's appearance when it is docked.  When it is undocked (dragged onto the Windows desktop), the gadget ignores these display options.  However, in Windows 7, gadgets are always housed on the Windows desktop, and the display options affect the gadget's appearance when the gadget is set to "smaller" mode.

Gadget Height. There are three possible gadget height options: small (200 pixels tall), medium (300), and large (400).

Magnify Text Size. Controls the size of the text font.  Possible choices are small, medium, large, and x-large.  The larger the font, the less results data is able to fit in the gadget without scrolling.

  4. Save current settings as default.

When you save the current settings as the default, they become the initial settings for new gadgets that are created.  You maintain the ability to change the new gadgets' settings, so it is a "starting point" for new gadget instances (copies).

A common use of the default settings feature is to initially set new gadget instances to show the games available in your geographic area.

There is only one set of default settings, so the current settings will overwrite any default settings that existed before the link was clicked.

Expanded View

The Lottery Results Gadget has an alternate view available, displaying more detail in a wider, more readable format.  The results are also linked directly to the corresponding Web pages, and links to useful lottery resources are included.

Figure 2. Expanded view.

Expanded View

There are different ways to display the expanded view of the gadget, depending on whether you use Windows 7 or Windows Vista.

  • Windows Vista: Drag the gadget onto the Windows desktop.

When a gadget is situated within the Sidebar, it is "docked".  When you drag the gadget off of the Sidebar onto the Windows desktop, it becomes "undocked" and is displayed in the larger expanded view.

The gadget will remain undocked until you drag it back onto the Sidebar.  Once it is back on the Sidebar the gadget will automatically revert to the smaller docked state.

  • Windows 7 Larger/Smaller buttonWindows 7: Click the Larger/Smaller button to toggle the gadget to its larger size.

In Windows 7, gadgets are always housed on the Windows desktop, and you can control whether they are displayed in the larger or smaller state by clicking the Larger/Smaller button (pictured to the right).

  • Expand linkBoth Windows 7 and Windows Vista: Click the <Expand link.

By clicking <Expand you can temporarily display the expanded view without the need to drag the gadget onto the Windows desktop (Windows Vista) or click the Larger/Smaller button (Windows 7).  In Windows gadget terminology, this is referred to as a "flyout".

When opened in this manner, the expanded view will contain a Collapse> link to close the flyout.

General Questions
+Where can I find a list of all the features?

The Lottery Results Gadget Product Page includes a large grid that explains the many features available to you.

After going to that page, you can click the Features Grid link at the top, which takes you directly to the content.

+How can I get the premium version with additional features?

You're using it right now!

We decided to release the gadget as "donationware", and we'd love to have your support, in whatever amount you'd like to give, to build the next versions, with more features, games, and information.

At the very least, we ask you to check out the Information page, which explains how you can help.  It will take you just a minute of your time!

If you'd like, you can go straight to the Donation page.

+Where is the download page?

You can always find the latest release of the Lottery Results Gadget on the download page.

There is a download button located on that page.  After you click the button, you have the option of either saving the install package to your PC or just running it.  If you're planning on installing the gadget on multiple computers you may want to save the install package in a file location that is accessible over your local network from the other computers, or on a flash drive or other portable media device.

If you are only installing the gadget on one PC, the easiest approach is to run the install package from its current location, rather than saving it.

+What is a gadget?

Gadgets are mini applications with a variety of possible uses.  Since a gadget is small, it usually has a very specific purpose, such a showing the current weather, the time, information about your PC, or in this case, lottery results.

Gadgets can only work within one specific place that they are designed for.  Some gadgets work in the Windows Vista Sidebar or on the Windows 7 desktop (like the Lottery Results Gadget), but other gadgets work on the Google web site, others work in the Windows Live site, others in Yahoo!, and so on.  You can't take a gadget that is designed for Windows Vista or Windows 7 and load it into Google (or vice-versa).

It can be fun to try out a bunch of different gadgets, because in general they are simple to install and use.  Over time you will find that certain gadgets improve your productivity, and become essential tools on your desktop.

For more information, see What is a gadget.

+Will this gadget work in web portals (Google, Yahoo!, Live, etc.)?

No, the Lottery Results Gadget only works in the Windows Vista Sidebar and on the Windows 7 desktop.

+Does this gadget work with other versions of Windows (XP, 98, etc.)?

No, Sidebar gadgets will only work with Windows Vista or Windows 7.

+Is this gadget really the first of its kind?

Yes!  This gadget is actually quite sophisticated, and lottery data is notoriously difficult to maintain on a day-to-day basis, so we think this has kept other people or companies from building such a thing, at least so far.

+What makes this gadget so special?

The Lottery Results Gadget is the culmination of many months of work, both in the gadget itself, as well as in the documentation and other support pages on the web.

As mentioned in our previous comment, we do not believe there is another program like it anywhere.  There are lots of places where results are shown, but no other place that gives you all those results in a real-time updating list.

Plus, the huge array of extra features is just icing on the cake. You'll find the Lottery Results gadget to be stocked full of fun features.

Overall, we hope you'll enjoy the tremendous attention to detail throughout the software and web support, continuing in the tradition of the Lottery Post web site.

Setup and Installation
+How do I download the latest version of the Lottery Results Gadget?

You can always find the latest release of the Lottery Results Gadget on the download page.

There is a download button located on that page.  After you click the button, you have the option of either saving the install package to your PC or just running it.  If you're planning on installing the gadget on multiple computers you may want to save the install package in a file location that is accessible over your local network from the other computers, or on a flash drive or other portable media device.

If you are only installing the gadget on one PC, the easiest approach is to run the install package from its current location, rather than saving it.

+How do I install the gadget?

The Lottery Results Gadget installs in exactly the same manner as every other Windows Vista/7 gadget.

The gadget comes packaged as a single .gadget file.  Run the file by either double-clicking it, or by clicking the button to immediately run the file when you download it.

You will be prompted to approve the installation, and then the entire installation takes place automatically.  When it's finished, you will see the gadget installed in the Sidebar (Windows Vista) or on the desktop (Windows 7), and the gadget will be available from the Add Gadgets button (Windows Vista) or by right-clicking the desktop and selecting Gadgets from the popup menu (Windows 7).

For more information, see How to install a gadget.

+How do I upgrade to the latest version?

If you were notified of the new release with an alert message inside the gadget itself, simply click the Download link in the alert message.  Or, download and run the .gadget file just like you are doing a new install.

Click "Yes", "Approve", and any other "yes" buttons to keep the install moving.

It is possible that the gadget will ask you if you wish to upgrade the existing gadget with the new one.  If that happens, answer "Yes".

Microsoft did not develop a robust upgrade mechanism into its gadget technology yet, so there's an equally-good chance that it will install the new version side-by-side with the old one, rather than upgrading the old one.  If that happens you'll have to uninstall the old one yourself after the install is finished.

+Can I be notified of new releases?

There are currently three ways to be notified of new releases:

  1. Sign up for e-mail alerts.
  2. Subscribe to the gadget's product release and news RSS feed.
  3. The gadget itself will check approximately once per day to see if a new version has been released.  The gadget will provide links to download the new version, or to ignore it.

Regardless of the second two points above, we recommend registering a valid, working e-mail address, since we occasionally send special private offers to our e-mail subscribers only.

+Can I install the gadget on Windows XP or 98?

No, Sidebar gadgets will only work with Windows Vista and Windows 7.

+What are the minimum requirements?

You must have Windows Vista or Windows 7 in order to install the gadget.  All editions of Windows Vista and Windows 7 can install gadgets, so they are all compatible with the Lottery Results Gadget.  See Requirements.

+Can I install the gadget in Windows Live or other Web portal?

No, the Lottery Results Gadget only works in the Windows Vista Sidebar or on the Windows 7 desktop.

Lottery Results
+Where do the results come from?

The lottery results come directly from Lottery Post, home of the most reliable and accurate lottery results on the Internet.  Lottery Post has been a leader in providing quality lottery data services since 2000.

As soon as the Lottery Post Results page receives the results, they are available for the gadget as well.

Lottery Post aggregates lottery results directly from the results published by the official lotteries.  Thus, Lottery Post maintains its own data feed; it does not use any third party data sources.

This independence from bulk data companies has given Lottery Post the freedom to continually improve its service, to the point where our results are posted quicker, and more consistently accurate, than anyone else.  Many of the lottery results you see on the Web originate at Lottery Post.

+Are there any errors in the data?

Because there is no "middle man" between Lottery Post and the official lottery results data, the only source of errors is with the officially published data.

We have found that 99% of the time the data published by the lotteries is accurate.  However, because human beings at the official lotteries enter the drawing results, errors do occasionally occur.

Unlike other data services, Lottery Post continually monitors the official results data for corrections, and we publish the corrected data as soon as it is available.

Likewise, the Lottery Results Gadget monitors the data available at Lottery Post for available corrections, and the gadget will show the corrected data and plays the "update sound" when corrected data is displayed.

+How long after the drawing are the results displayed?

It varies by state/province/country and by game.  For games with fixed payout amounts the lottery tends to report the results within minutes of the drawing.

For games with pari-mutuel payouts (prizes based on the number of entries and the number of winners) the results can sometimes take longer to be published.

After using the gadget for a while you will get a feel for how long a game takes to be reported by the lottery.

+Are upcoming jackpot amounts shown?

Yes, the gadget will display the next jackpot, as soon as the amount is published.

+How can I find past results?

Simple!  Click on the game name in the gadget, and a browser window will open to the Lottery Post page containing the game details and results history.

Once there, you can also navigate to a trove of features, some free and some premium, such as statistics, years of history, jackpot history, lottery results search engine, predictions, wheels, systems, and lots more.

Working with SideShow
+What is SideShow?

The Lottery Results Gadget's built-in SideShow capability allows you to view the latest lottery results on any Windows SideShow device, such as compatible mobile phones, keyboard displays, remote controls, electronic picture frames, and other auxiliary displays.

SideShow devices are separate from your PC, and the only time they need to communicate with each other is when you want the PC to feed new results to the device.  In many cases the devices interact wirelessly, so everything happens automatically and seamlessly.

For more information about Windows SideShow, see Microsoft's Windows SideShow Explained.

+How does SideShow work?

Other than configuring SideShow support (see "How do I install the SideShow display?" below), there is very little you have to do to keep it loaded with the latest results.

A SideShow device will continue receiving results as long as the Lottery Results Gadget remains open in the Sidebar (in Windows Vista) or on the desktop (in Windows 7), and the device is connected and turned on.  Once you change either of those things, such as disconnecting the device, the lottery results stored in the SideShow device will not change until you reconnect it again (or if you manually delete the results).

To see the lottery results on the SideShow device, use the directional arrow buttons on the device to move the selection highlight to the Lottery Results icon, and press the OK or Enter button.  Then you will be presented with a menu of all the different ways you can view the results.

For more information about how Windows SideShow works, see Microsoft's Windows SideShow Explained.

+How does the SideShow device know which results to download?

The SideShow device will download and display the exact same lottery results that you selected in the gadget's Configuration Settings.

If you want to change what results are displayed in the SideShow device, you need to make the change in the gadget's settings, and then the change will be moved to the SideShow device automatically.

+I want different results in SideShow and the gadget.

You can drag another Lottery Results Gadget onto the Sidebar (Windows Vista) or onto the Windows desktop area (Windows 7), and use one gadget to feed the SideShow device, and the other to display results on the computer.  Each gadget instance maintains its own independent settings.

+I want SideShow to look and function like the gadget.

Unfortunately that is not possible, given the limitations of the SideShow technology.  SideShow is purposely designed to operate on lower-end forms of technology, such as electronic picture frames, so it is only capable of simple menu selection a text displays.  It is not possible to build dynamic, animated displays like the gadget.

+How do I install the SideShow display?

There is nothing separate to install, but there are two places where you need to activate the SideShow support:  in the gadget settings window and in Windows Vista/7.

  1. Open the gadget's Configuration Settings window by clicking the small wrench icon.  Then, place a checkmark in the checkbox labeled, "Enable SideShow".  Answer "Yes" to the popup question asking if you're sure.
  2. After completing the first step, You may see a Windows "balloon help" notifying you that the gadget is able to communicate with a SideShow device.
  3. Click the Windows Start menu button, and type "SideShow".  Click Windows SideShow when it appears at the top of the Start menu.
  4. The SideShow window will show you all the SideShow-compatible devices and gadgets installed on your computer.  If you have no SideShow device installed, you will not be able to use SideShow.  Place a checkmark at the intersection of the device you wish to use and the Lottery Results Gadget.
  5. At that point, SideShow is ready, and your device will be automatically loaded when new results are received, or the next time you open Configuration Settings and click the OK button.

Troubleshooting

Click a problem below to see common solutions.

Show AllHide All

Setup and Installation
+There is no Sidebar on the screen

First, be sure you are using Windows 7 or Windows Vista!  Other versions of Windows, such as Windows XP, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, and Windows 2003, do not have the Sidebar.

If you use Windows 7, the Sidebar is no longer used, and then gadgets are always placed directly on the Windows desktop (the background).

If you are using Windows Vista and you do not see the Sidebar, it could mean that either the Sidebar is not running, or else it is "minimized" (closed).  There is one method to activate the Sidebar that works in both cases:

  1. Click Start Start
  2. Type sidebar
  3. Click Windows Sidebar when it appears at the top of the Start menu
+The list of States and Games never appears in the Options window

The states (and other types of jurisdictions) are retrieved from the lottery results service each time you open the Options window.  That's done to ensure you gain immediate access to new or changed game lineups.

Because the list is loaded with fresh information each time, it requires Internet connectivity in order to load.

Please see I'm getting a "No Connection" error in the General Problems or Issues section below for possible causes and solutions.

+I want to restore the default settings for new gadgets

In the Options window, there is a link at the bottom which saves the current settings as the default, for any time a new lottery results gadget is created on the Sidebar.

For example, it can be configured to always start with the Georgia state games pre-loaded.

Restore the default settings, open the Options window, and do the following steps:

  1. Click Remove All under the selected games list.
  2. Set Sound to No Sound (Silent).
  3. Set Gadget Height to small.
  4. Set Magnify Text Size to Medium (default).
  5. Click Save as my default settings.
General problems or issues
+I'm getting a "No Connection" error

When you see "No Connection" it means that the gadget is unable to communicate over the Internet with the lottery results service.

After the connection is broken, the gadget will continue trying to re-connect until it succeeds.  A countdown timer indicates when the next retry will occur.

There are several possible reasons, so we'll try to cover the most common ones:

  • Your Internet connection was dropped.  If you use a dial-up Internet connection, the gadget will stop working once you hang up.  If you're a broadband user, check to be sure your Internet service is functioning.
  • Network or hardware failure.  A network cable becoming unplugged or a power loss to your router or switch is a sure-fire way to see this error message.
  • Firewall or proxy server blocking access.  Many work environments have strict policies against access to entertainment content.  This is just one example; there are many ways that communications could be blocked by a software or hardware firewall.  Have you installed any Internet security software recently that might be causing a problem?
  • Lottery results service offline.  Every web site and service on the Internet has experienced downtime occasionally, and the lottery results service is no different.  We aim for 100% uptime, but realistically we know there will be unavoidable service interruptions from time to time.
+New results are not being shown

First of all, there are redundancies built into the gadget to make sure the gadget keeps chugging along, so it is unlikely (yet theoretically possible) that it will ever stop.

If you suspect new results are not being updated in the gadget, you can verify this by clicking the game link in the gadget.  Doing so will open the game page at Lottery Post, and you can instantly see if there are new results posted at Lottery Post that are not being shown in the gadget

If you see that Lottery Post has the same last draw info, then that means new draw info is not yet available.

If you have found that the gadget has indeed stopped updating, we recommend closing and re-opening the Sidebar.  For the gadget to stop working it would probably take some kind of failure in the Sidebar itself, so re-starting the Sidebar should clear the problem.

To close, and then re-open the Vista Sidebar:

  1. Find the Sidebar icon in the Notification Area (displayed in the lower-right part of the screen, unless you moved the Start menu).
  2. Right-click the Sidebar icon, and select Exit.  That will close the Sidebar.  Windows may show you a message asking if you're sure, or informing you of how to bring the Sidebar back once it's closed.
  3. To re-open the Sidebar, first click Start Start
  4. Type sidebar
  5. Click Windows Sidebar when it appears at the top of the Start menu
SideShow Support
+The lottery results are not updating on SideShow

In our own testing we found that the SideShow technology is not perfected yet, and we have seen problems with results not getting downloaded to the device.  However, there are many other possible reasons, so before deciding it's a bug, be sure to check each of these possible causes:

  • Check the Windows SideShow applet in Control Panel to be sure the SideShow device is still selected with a checkmark.  Because the settings are buried in a Control Panel applet, it can be easy to forget to check.
  • If you close a gadget that is feeding data to a SideShow device, it permanently breaks the connection.  If you want to get lottery results flowing to the SideShow device again, you have to rebuild the connection by following each of the steps outlined in the section, "How do I install the SideShow display?" in the FAQ section.
  • Go through each of the troubleshooting tips for when a gadget stops receiving new lottery results.  If the gadget stops receiving new results, so will the SideShow device.
  • We have seen some cases in which a SideShow device stopped receiving new results after it went into "sleep"mode (like a screen saver mode).  We would recommend that you experiment with your device's behavior in and out of sleep mode, and maybe disable sleep mode if it is a problem.  (See the device's instructions.)

Check with your SideShow device manufacturer to see if there are any specific requirements that you need to be aware of in order to keep refreshing the data on the device.

+I can't change the lottery results on SideShow

The contents of the SideShow device are controlled completely from the Sidebar gadget.

To change what results get displayed in the SideShow device, change them in the Sidebar gadget.  Those changes will be automatically propagated to the device.

+The text appears corrupted on the SideShow device

It is possible that your device has very specific requirements that is not part of our specification.

Please use the contact form to send us the specific brand and model number of your SideShow device.  Include the exact text that is corrupt.  For example, "the California Daily Derby results for September 12, 2007."

Do you have a problem we didn't cover here?  You can contact us by e-mail.
