Nebraska man claims $198,000 Pick 5 lottery jackpot
Nebraska man claims $198,000 Pick 5 lottery jackpotPosted: 2/25/2005 2:54:00 PM After using a Tupperware cookie jar as a safe for two days, an Aurora man redeemed his jackpot-winning Nebraska Pick 5 ticket worth $198,000. Gale Rath purchased a five-play Nebraska Pick 5 ticket at the Pump & Pantry in Aurora for the Saturday, Feb. 19 drawing. The next day, he got a list of the winning numbers after a friend had told him, "Someone won on a ticket in Aurora." Rath retrieved the ticket from his truck, checked the numbers and realized he held the $198,000 winner. The winning numbers for Feb. 19 were 02, 10, 12, 20 and 31. The Nebraska Lottery offices were closed on Monday due to President's Day, so Rath had to hold the ticket -- keeping it safe in the cookie jar -- for an extra day. Joined by his mother, he claimed the jackpot at Nebraska Lottery headquarters early Tuesday morning. He told Lottery officials that he was just "numb" and had no idea what he would do with his winnings, but added that he would, "figure something out." After taxes (25 percent federal and 5 percent state), Rath received a check for $138,600. The odds of matching all five winning numbers to win the Nebraska Pick 5 jackpot are 1 in 501,942. The overall odds of winning something in the game are 1 in 8. Since the Nebraska Lottery began offering Nebraska Pick 5 in April of 1995, there have been 291 jackpot winners. All this makes me wonder at age 29 and all the thousands of dollars I have blown in the lottery how many tickets i had that werent winners the day of the drawing they were bought for were winners for the next drawing the day after. Its all about timing, but there is no doubt in my mind I will hit a 5 out of 5 soon, whether it be ILL, IND, or Iowa.

it won't be IN. trust me. it won't be IN. go for IA. it has the best odds. pick 5/35 with a $100,000 top prize. IL's pays out a minimum of $100,000, but you have to pick 3/39. IN's is a pick 5/36, but it only pays out $50,000, and the Hosier Lottery is rigged, so you will very likely not win. they almost never see a top prize winner. I finally got the old domain name back. Go to my website at www.dr-ew.tk. There's still some funny stuff there.

i have hit 4 out of 5 twice in indiana , they payout about twice a month on the top prize. they only take in about 14-16k a drawing for the lucky five so twice a month is pretty predictable. iowa i think might be rigged as someone last fall hit for 300k and it wasnt won again until real recently. illinois i only play when it is above at least 250k.

I'm always struck by how much the government takes before you get your money. This guy didn't win $198,000, he won $138,600. I think they should figure in the government confiscation factor and reflect it in the announced jackpots. Tell us what WE are going to win beforehand, not what we and the government are going to split, and announce that as the jackpot.

Yeah when you count the taxes paid on winnings the payback factor in a lot of these games is even more laughable, you are SO MUCH BETTER OFF going to a casino or the horse track. Just go pick numbers out of a hat at the track, I bet at end of year you would have as much as with playing the dumb lottery. I wish I took my own advice.

In Canada all of the winnings are lump sum and TAX FREE One thing good about Washington state is that there is no state income tax but,you have to pay 25% Federal tax before you see a nickel.

NY Lotto pays back only 38%-40% before federal, state, and in many cases LOCAL taxes.

That's a nice Pick 5 jackpot. The highest I ever saw NY's Take 5 at is around $100,000. What state has the largest Pick 5 jackpot?

I think Illinois' rolls up til somebody wins, it did when I lived there anyway. Here in Arizona the max is 50,000 up to 10 winners. 11 or more winners have to split a maximum of 500,000. Winners are rare, though there were six of them one night about a week ago. Arizona's making a ton of money on Fantasy Five, they could easily increase the top prize to 100,000 or let it go pari-mutuel (but they won't.)
