UK Lottery winner 'saw it in tarot'

May 18, 2005, 9:52 a.m.

UK National Lottery UK National Lottery: UK Lottery winner 'saw it in tarot'

A woman who won more than £5 million (US$9.2 million) playing UK Lotto says she saw her win predicted in a tarot reading.

Deborah Mather, 47, from Chorley, Lancashire, bought a ticket for Saturday's Lotto draw after dealing herself the wheel of fortune card.

The mother-of-one thought she might have a £10 win, but instead scooped the £5,150,514 jackpot.

"The cards told me there was a windfall to come - but I didn't think it was going to be this big," she said.

Mrs. Mather left her home town of Liverpool at the age of 18 to live in Wigan, Greater Manchester.

Mrs. Mather predicted a windfall was on its wayThe former bookkeeper had to give up work after falling down a flight of stairs three years ago. She moved to Chorley at around the same time.

"I had an accident and broke a lot of bones and could not work so decided to take up a hobby and the hobby was tarot card reading," Mather said.

She is now thinking of using some of her millions for a dream move - also predicted in the cards - by going back to live in Wigan.

"The cards never tell you anything that is not going to happen but I never thought in my wildest dreams it was going to be this."

'Dream car'

Mrs. Mather bought the Lucky Dip ticket with the winning numbers - 12, 18, 22, 33, 43 and 48 - at a Spar shop in Wigan.

The Citroen C2 - Mrs. Mather's 'dream car'"I am afraid I was shaking and jumping up and down and shouting 'I've won it, I've won it'.

"It was absolutely fantastic, I have not slept for the last three days. I am really thrilled."

Mrs Mather also plans to go on a cruise and will buy her "dream car" - a Citroen C2 - as she does not want anything "too flash".

I think the tides are shifting to the psychics lately!!  Maybe I should take up a new profession.  I need to work on my dream number predictions.

Yes, it says in the story it was a "Lucky Dip" -- the UK's version of "Quick Pick".

If enough pepole dream they will win, some or one of them will eventually have a win.

And a lot of people dream about winning the lottery.

It's the same with tarot cards. Many of them see they will win in the cards. Once in a while some of them will win also and give credit to the cards.

Thanks for the translation, Todd. BTW, I just checked my horoscope. Look for me to win the Powerball jackpot tonight!

Is a quick pick when someone has the machine at the store pick the numbers?

Hey, everyone has an opinion, and there's plenty of people who do not side with you.  Just because you take a completely pragmatic appraoch to lotteries does not mean that's the gospel truth.  I try to be tolerant of ALL viewpoints, not just my own.
