Even though the Powerball lottery jackpot was not awarded Wednesday evening, 405,224 players across the nation won a total of more than $3.5 million in prizes. Because no one correctly matched all six numbers in Wednesday's drawing the jackpot will grow to an estimated $92 million. The cash option for the Saturday, September 17th drawing will be an estimated $46.5 million. The numbers drawn Wednesday night were 21, 24, 42, 49, 50 and the Powerball was 1. The Power Play multiplier was 4. Three winning tickets in Arizona, Idaho, and Wisconsin matched all 5 white numbers for a $200,000 prize. Fourteen players matched 4 white numbers plus the Powerball and won $10,000. Seven additional players who won at this prize level also purchased the Power Play and had their $10,000 winnings multiplied by 4 to $40,000. More than 52,000 winning Powerball players multiplied their prizes by 4 Wednesday. They were able to do that by purchasing the Power Play option for one dollar. With Power Play you multiply your Powerball winnings from 2 to 5 times, except for the jackpot. At the beginning of each drawing a wheel is spun to select that night's multiplier. Players should carefully check their tickets after every draw. Even if there are no jackpot winners there are always tens of thousands of winners at other prize levels. Players purchased more than $17.8 million in tickets between Sunday and Wednesday night. The lotteries sold more than $2 billion in Powerball tickets in FY05. With every one concentrating on MM, now would be a good time to hit thejackpot on PB. If MM is hit tomorrow, no one would show up at the interview for the $35M cash walk-a-way for PB.

Chewie - you are so right! $35 million would be plenty for me and my business partner (we have agreement that if one hits big we split). If one is lucky enough to win one of the jackpots, nothing would prevent that luck from continuing - for a while. There have been several articles where some one who won a major prize, came back later and won another. Of course, it never hurts to "help" the luck along by studying and purchasing tickets that have the high propability of hitting. Always buy one based on pure luck though.

All of a sudden, PB is looking really good. Guess I'll have to spend the gas money to drive to PA this afternoon (PA has no state tax, CT does). The question is: How high will the roll go? Should I buy one weeks worth, two weeks worth, five weeks worth?

You know, even with seemingly impossible odds, people really DO sometimes beat the odds, no matter how long they are. If you take some time searching the News forum for different combinations of words you can come up with stories posted here at LP about people who beat the odds, winning multiple games. Prior odds of hitting both might be over 25 quadrillion as NoCompLotto indicated. But, once one of them is being hit, then the odds of hitting both goes down to the normal, 1 in 146M or 175M, which is exactly same as the odds of hitting just (in fact, the remaining) one. May sound completely absurd to nonplayers but, in my opinion, not two completely different worlds of odds to any MM or PB player. 1 in 150M and 1 in 25 quadrillion might be pretty close as long as one is concerned about which adjective should be used to describe which one of them. | | |

Some people are able to beat the long odds twice. Did anyone happen to read about the 92 year old guy out in Vegas who won IGT's Megabucks slot jackpot for the second time last Thursday? He hit for $21.1 million at the Cannery Casino. His previous win was for $4.6 million at the Mirage in 1989. It's a pretty good story. Just do a news search for megabucks + jackpot and you should find several stories about it. I'd consider myself extremely lucky just to beat the PowerBall game once! Better luck, aye' | | |
