Another thing about the IL/IA numbers is the payout. It is Illinois who draws the numbers but Iowa has higher payouts on them. $1.00 pick 3 str in IL pays $500. and in IA it pays $600. $1.00 pick 4 str in IL pays $5,000 while in IA it pays $6,000. Excellent observation!

This goes to show that anything can and will happen in the world of mathematics/gambling. About 12 years ago a couple hit the Pick 6 twice in a six month period in my county...what are the odds of that happening? At the time I'd guess about the odds were 8 million to one on the Pick Six in my State. Math wizards got any answers?

There's nothing statistically significant about the first time, because they simply had the ticket with the numbers that happened to get picked. Somebody was going to win that draw or a subsequent draw, and in terms of probabilities it didn't matter who won because we're looking at who did win and not making a prediction about who will win. Once they did win, the odds of them winning again were exactly the same as the odds for anybody else who bought the same number of tickets. If they bought one ticket in the intervening six months then there was a 1 in 8 million chance that they'd win again and if they bought 1000 tickets there was a 1 in 8000 chance. At the same time there were also similar chances that any of the other previous winners would win a second time. Once again, we're now looking at what did happen rather than making predictions about what will happen. If there were already 500 previous winners (a completely arbitrary number that may or may not be close to accurate) and they were buying an average of 2 tickets per drawing then there would have been a 1 in 8000 chance for any given drawing to be won by a previous winner. Assuming weekly drawings, over any particular 6 month period there would be about a 1 in 308 chance that one of the 500 would be the winner in one of those drawings. Over the intervening 12 years those winners could have bought 624,000 tickets at the rate of 2 per drawing, which would result in about a 1 in 13 chance of a repeat winner (based on the game not changing). With a lot more than 13 states offering 6 of n lotteries, it should be expected that there will be a few people who have won twice. If nobody in your state had done it your post just would have been written by somebody from the state that did have a two-time winner.
