The jackpot in the multi-state Mega Millions lottery has grown to $56 million for Friday's drawing.
None of the tickets sold for Tuesday night's $42 million drawing matched all five lotto numbers and the Mega Ball.
There were eight second-prize winners: 1 from California, 1 from Georgia, 1 from Illinois, 1 from Massachusetts, 2 from Michigan, 1 from New York, and 1 from Washington. Each ticket matched all five lotto numbers but not the Mega Ball number to win $250,000.
The California second-prize winners will each receive $215,721, because California awards prizes based on the number of winners and the amount of sales, rather than the fixed prize amounts offered by the other Mega Millions states.
Also, 36 players matched four of the five lotto numbers, plus the Mega Ball number. Those tickets are each worth $10,000. In California those tickets are worth $14,708.
The winning numbers were 27, 28, 30, 42 and 50. The Mega Ball number was 22.
The Texas Megaplier was 4.

I've read articles by a few lottery "experts" and one suggestion is never to bet mostly even or mostly odd numbers. Another is to make sure you don't have all high or all low numbers like choose 2 from 1-23 and 3 from 24-46. On Tues 4/5 numbers plus the mega ball were even, and all 5 numbers were high. I usually see this kind of draw roll over, but wouldn't it be nice to win with these numbers? So maybe one way of selecting is picking a set of numbers everyone thinks can't possibly hit!

Should anybody be surprised that about half of the numbers picked are odd and half are even when half of the numbers to choose from are odd and half of them are even? The "experts" are simply getting basic probability right, without providing any useful information. Still, I suppose that's better than all the times they don't provide any useful info and get things wrong. You can look at past results all you want, but there's absolutely nothing any of us can do, as far as what kind of numbers we pick, to make our wait shorter or longer. The ones you cite above simply confirm what probability theory suggests. Either your numbers come up or they don't, and the only way to change the odds is to buy a different number of tickets. A number between 1 and 14 may come up in about 80% of draws, but any 14 numbers that you didn't play also have an 80% chance of being drawn, and there are 50 numbers that you didn't play on any given ticket. Playing 1,3,6,9,13, and 12 wins you zip if the winning numbers are 1,3,7,10,12 and 13. Every schoolkid knows that "close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades," but somehow a lot of people forget that when they grow up and play the lottery.

Powerball has large increases with a decrease in what their cash prize is. Mega Millions is also on a roll with no reduction in what the cash prize is. Sounds like only one game is doing it right.

It's sad that even though Powerball's annuity is more bulked up than Mega Millions' is, Mega Millions' annuity rollovers still outpace Powerball's.

Agree. It's all hype to make the jackpot seem larger. Although there are people who prefer the annuity. (I wouldn't)

Yes! Maybe I didn't say it that way, but that's exactly what I meant. It's a game of chance and, no matter how much a person analyzes the probabilities, there are too many chances to follow a rule of thumb. I always read the press releases for Florida and although most people seem to get QPs, many winners say "I used my children's birthdays" or "I used the numbers on my house & my license plate" and I always hear that's a silly thing to do. I'm sure the winners didn't feel too silly when they collected all that money.

All those winners are just letting us know that's how a sizable percentage of players pick their numbers. For some it's just a simple way to choose 5 or 6 numbers, and for others it's because they think those numbers are special. Numbers are meaningful for math, but as far as the lottery goes they're just convenient names for the balls, so that we can tell which is which. The balls could just as easily be named for sitcom characters, and then some people would play Fred and Ethel because I Love Lucy was their favorite show. I'm guessing that not many people think Fred and Ethel are particularly lucky names, but somes would think Fred and Ethel are special because I love Lucy is one of the all time classic sitcoms. That would be a silly reason for picking them, but they'd still have just as much chance as any other names. There's nothing you can do to increase your chances, but there's nothing you can do to decrease them, either. There are silly reasons, but there are no silly methods.
