Insider BuzzInsider Buzz: Winning lottery ticket led police to murder suspect

A winning Texas lottery ticket has put police on the trail of the suspect in a DeKalb County, Georgia, murder.

Police had been searching for Kelsey Ruth since the murder of his ex-girlfriend, 27-year old Tai Morgan, in her home on Canary Court on Tuesday.

DeKalb Police suspected Ruth fled to his home state of Texas so they sent wanted posters to television stations there.

At the same time those wanted posters with Ruth's picture and a shot of his car went out his mother was winning $3.4 million in the Texas state lottery.

In a strange twist of fate, a reporter who had studied one of the wanted posters was sent to interview Ruth's mother about her good fortune.

When he arrived at the house he recognized the car in the wanted poster and called police.

Officers arrived at the house and confirmed the car belongs to Ruth.

Investigators believe Ruth is now hiding in the Lubbock area and is armed and dangerous.

Lubbock Man Wanted For Murder In Georgia

Police say a man wanted for murder in Georgia could be hiding out in Lubbock.

Kelsey Lacarl Ruth, 32, is wanted for a murder that took place in the Atlanta area. DeKalb County, Georgia police say Ruth shot his ex-girlfriend, and the mother of his two children, Tai Morgan, in the head, then fled from her home. A repairman found the woman's body in her home Tuesday morning.

Police believe Ruth could be at his mother's house here in Lubbock.

A murder warrant has been issued for Ruth.

On Wednesday, KLBK-13 found Ruth's car, a 2000 Pontiac Sunfire, parked in front of his mother's house at 3418 East Baylor.

Investigators say Ruth was released from jail in October for domestic violence against Morgan.

Police now believe Ruth is heading to his mother's house. Ruth's mother, Brenda Mitchell, is one of six Lubbock women who recently won $36 million playing the Texas lottery. Last Friday, Mitchell collected a $3.48 million check in Austin.

Police think Ruth could be with Mitchell or somewhere else in Lubbock.

Ruth is a black male, 5-foot-10, and weighs around 140 pounds. He is considered armed and dangerous.

If you recognize him or know anything about his whereabouts, call the Crimeline at 741-1000.

Will all that money, his mother might be making arrangements to get him out of the country. BTW, that is the happiest photo of a suspect I've seen in a long time. Smiley

" Investigators say Ruth was released from jail in October for domestic violence against Morgan. "

I wish the police had taken this case more seriously BEFORE he killed his girlfriend.  Domestic violence is not a joke, but they usually wait until they find a body before they actually listen to the frightened woman whose life is in danger.  Where did a convicted criminal get a gun? (I'm not naive, but this is another big problem in our society. Surprised it didn't happen in Florida.)

Anyway, getting back to the subject of the Lottery, it is interesting that this article proves that anonymity will not only protect the winner, but also his/her family.  In this case, they were able to find leads to a murder suspect. However, most of the time the people are innocent working folks who just want some privacy. As DoubleDown always says "You can't fix stupid" and Ruth should have realized that his mother would be interviewed by a reporter or on the news and that any contact with her should have been avoided. I'm happy to read he turned himself into the police. Another s***bag off the streets.

I take people who are violence or alway asking for money very seriously, there's no good reasons for either to be in my life if they aren't family.  Even being in the family has its limits.

Even though his mother can afford a good lawyer (now) for her son, I ask why throw good money after bad for! I know I wouldn't (if I was her), especially with a track record of committing domestic violence against the woman before and spending time in jail for it before! Now he can spend the rest of his life in jail or just admit it and ask for the lethal injection as soon as possible and be done with it! But he won't, he'll claim to be innocent, just like most losers!

Keep dreaming the impossible dream, it just may come true!

The mother's good fortune would most likely go to her grandchildren (I hope).  They are not lost causes yet, like their father.  This guy sounds like he would beat the life out of his mother.  Good time to lock him up for good Mommy!  Look at what he has done to the lives of your grand children!
