Georgia Lottery: Publix workers win $1 million lottery jackpotTwo grocery store workers who won $1 million in the Georgia Lottery will take part in a check presentation ceremony this afternoon at the store where they purchased the tickets.
Barbara "Chessi" Scarbary, 19, of Jackson, and Megan Maloy, 24, of McDonough, won in the instant game Georgia's $500 Million Club.
The pair, who work together as customer service associates at a Publix grocery store, scratched the winning ticket Friday while parked outside the McDonough convenience store where they purchased it.
"I was just screaming," Maloy said in a statement released Monday. "There were people walking by staring at us."
Both returned to work and reported their good fortune, and told co-workers they would continue working.
"Everybody's really happy for them," said co-worker Mary Neal, of Locust Grove. "They were both so excited."
The Georgia's $500 Million Club tickets cost $20 each and went on sale Jan. 30. Since, then, they have since netted four $1 million prizes.
In addition to the Maloy and Skarbary win, Tillis Johnson of Eastman in Dodge County, won $1 million on Friday. Tammy Andrews of Rydal, scratched off a $1 million winner Tuesday from a ticket she bought a convenience store in nearby Cartersville, and Lawrenceville's Yaser Daoud reported a million-dollar winning ticket on Tuesday as well.
To win the instant game, players scratch off the entire playing field and match any of the 20 "your numbers" to any of the six "winning numbers" at the top of the card. If a winning match shows a "10X," the player wins 10 times the amount of money shown; if the match shows a "20X," the player wins 20 times the amount.
Maloy, a McDonough resident, is studying information technology at Clayton State University. Scarbary, of Jackson, is studying business at Griffin Technical College.
Georgia's $500 Million Club is the newest instant game, with more than 3.8 million prizes totaling more than $500 million.
