Cookie credited with positive message, not winning numbers

Two Nampa men will split a $600,000 Powerball prize, and they credit a fortune cookie for their good fortune.

John Garcia and Eddie Dietrich bought their winning ticket at the Maverik Store at 2516 W. Karcher Road in Nampa.

Idaho Lottery officials say the winning ticket was for last Wednesday's Powerball draw. It matched five numbers, but not the Powerball and was worth $200,000, but since they paid an extra dollar for the Power Play, their winnings were multiplied by three.

Just a few days before the drawing the two men ordered Chinese food. The fortune cookie inscription on Garcia's fortune read, "You will inherit a large sum of money."

"That kind of thing is just completely random, but I'm glad the fortune cookie was right," said Garcia.

After taxes, the two men will take home $403,200.

For their part in selling the winning ticket, Maverik earned a bonus of $70,000.

Just last week, Pam Schoppe came forward to claim a $200,000 prize. Her winning Powerball ticket was also purchased at the same Maverik store.

None of the tickets sold for the Powerball game Saturday night matched all six numbers drawn, which were: 17-29-31-34-49 Powerball: 16 Power Play 2.

The estimated jackpot for this Wednesday's Powerball drawing is an estimated $230 million.

John Garcia and Eddie Dietrich are Idaho's latest big lottery winners.

This happened a few years ago.  I bought Chinese food for months and used the tag as my numbers for the ticket. Nothing!  If you were meant to win, you will win.  Otherwise ...

Yeah, but did he play the numbers and win the lottery?

Yeah I got similar cookies many times and nothing. It is always very easy to give credit when it happens, even if it is once out of a million times.

Need to go back to my favorite restaurant.  I did win a small amount once with the fortune cookie numbers.  Crunch!

Nope, he didn't play the numbers.  But I am hoping we at least get a million for each time he has gotten the cookie's fortune.

I remember a few years ago a bunch of people around the country played the numbers found inside a fortune cookie and won second prizes in either Powerbal or Mega Millions.
