Calif. Lottery may build $60 million headquarters

Calif. Lottery may build $60 million headquarters

California Lottery

Officials contend new building would save money overall

California lottery officials are thinking about building a new $60 million headquarters despite a massive state budget deficit.

The new headquarters would be smaller and less expensive to operate, officials said.

"No taxpayer dollars would be used for this project," said Al Lundeen, lottery spokesman. "It would come out of the administrative costs of the lottery."

But some Sacramento residents said they were surprised to hear the lottery might spend money to rebuild when education and social programs are being slashed.

"I think it'd be a good idea to put more money to schools," resident Tony Lopez said.

Taxpayers who spoke with a local television reporter said they wondered about the $1.2 billion per year that goes to schools from lottery sales.

"They got a pretty good percentage going to schools, as long as they don't touch that, why we're in good shape," resident Ken Lynch said.

The lottery commission is currently seeking design bids for the new structure, which would be built on the site of the existing headquarters.

The commission said it will decide later this year whether to give the project the green light.

Lame idea period in a downturn economy.  Dead   Crazy  .... And of course they'll have to decrease payouts up matrices to stiff players to pay for it.

If administrative cost of the lottery are bringing in that much money why were they talking about privatizing it?

     Be$$$$$t of luck to everyone!!!

Wow get this The terminator says he wants to look into privatizing the lottery...........the lottery officials say the revenues are dipping .................. and now the lottery commission wants to build a 60 million dollar headquarters.

Does anyone in Calif. know what's going on seems doubtful to me. Why consider building a new headquarters if your going to sell the lottery to a private contractor. Doesn't make sense to me.

California Gov. calls for expanding, privatizing lottery

You’re dealing with subsidized bureaucrats and politicians, who have guaranteed salaries, no matter what happens.  Where’s the problem?

Building a condo with 45 floors comes out to be 8-10 million dollars and for the extra finishes add 3 to 4 million to that...No building cost 60 million dollars..What are they building the pentagon...They got something up their sleeves...

You're not considering the cost of 40" HD televisions and all the Oak furntiure required to provide a proper working environment.  Then, when you add the requirements of the environmental wakos, the price will double before it is finished.  This is Calfiornia were talking about.  I have yet to see anything related to the government come in on budget.  Thats the down side of free money, and the Lottery officials are receiving free money.  People stand in line to make sure all those people in that building receive annual bonuses. what a "job"!

60 Billion is chump change when it doesn't come out of your pocket.  Thus the creation of Big Government and its self-created sanctioned sub-governments.  The Lottery Officials are appointed by the government, and they hire siblings at ridiculous salary's to manage something the government wants to say it doesn't own; until it is to their advantage to own. Then disown it again when it is opportunistic to not own.  The price of the building doesn't come fram taxpayers, because it is the Lottery.  The "Lottery" says it needs money to operate and pay its adminsitrators, so he government says keep that and give me the rest. The Lottery passes on the rest to the Government.  The Government then adds that money to the tax coffers.  Conveniently, it is not tax dollars, it is just tax dollars not applied to the tax coffers.  Wonderful how lawyers can make magic happen.  Now you see it, now you don't. In this case, the tax payer never saw it, it was cream off the top, and no one pays attention to the cream. When you are only interested in what you can get from the lottery, what the lottery can get from you is lost behind the shiney lure and flashing dollars signs along the roadway. When you see the billboards along the highway, always remember YOU paid for those advertisements!
