Man quits lottery pool, then wins with Quick Pick

May 28, 2008, 8:57 am

UK National LotteryUK National Lottery: Man quits lottery pool, then wins with Quick PickRating:

Mark Weir won a £2.7 million (US $5.3 million) Lotto jackpot, and then told the members of his former lottery pool, "You won't get a penny".

Father-of-two Mark, 45, hit the jackpot with a £1 Quick Pick ticket he bought in last Wednesday's UK National Lottery draw after failing to win anything for years in his office lottery pool.

As he picked up his winnings yesterday, plastics factory machine operator Mark, from Darlington, Co Durham, said, "The lads at work won't be getting a share.

"I paid into a [lottery pool] at the factory for years and never won anything to shout about. But the [Quick Pick] has got me the jackpot."

He and wife Julie, 44, who plan to continue working, are planning a shopping spree. Top of Mark's list is new fishing gear. He added, "I'd like a new car but now I can afford a dream model, I don't know what to buy."

Pharmacy assistant Julie said, "The only thing I want is a trip to New York."

I've always said you have just as good a chance of winning on your own as you do in a pool -- the difference being that when you play on your own you get to keep the whole thing.

My advice is to not go out of your way to start a pool.  If there's an office pool kicking around then sure, it makes perfect sense to chip in.  But don't make it your primary way to play.

I'd rather play on my own as well, I do not want to share a good jackpot with any other players. I have waited too long to win a good prize. Plus it would help with my survival, so that I may have a better life. And not worry about bills, etc,..

I agree with Todd but I'm not a real powerball player just here and there. When the jackpot gets high we do an office pool. I only participate because I'm scared if I don't and they win I will be the only one stuck still working. I always buy one ticket for myself when I do participate though.

Congrats to Mark. Maybe the office pool was jinxing him. He won on his own luck!

I used to think the same thing. After ten years at my last place, I retired. Then realized the odds were al ready so great against winning a jackpot, if I won, do I really want to share with these people? Nope.  Especially, if it was not a gigantic jackpot.  Then I would have to put up with twenty people telling me how they spent their $1500.

they so jinxed him .. good for him! i NEVER play with the group .. i look at them, say no thanks and go buy my own ticket - i have been known to be messy at times in buying the EXACT numbers as some groups [have my people on the inside] but the most netted was $150 .. but groups, yeah, it always gets sticky with the dividing part, math is guaranteed to get fuzzy!! Skeptical

I agree. I don't think lottery pools are a bad thing, but I've never wanted to join one. I like playing alone and if I win I want to win alone! LOL

I have never played in a work pool and I never will! I'm to greedy, I want it all (for myself) and I want it now..... lol

I guess that's the attitude I have always had (all my life). Big Grin

I don't trust lottery pool managers, they could leave the country with the winnings.

Or if I was a lottery pool manger and we won I don't think I could share the 2 or 3 million in my bank account and watch drop to 200,000 and go back to work, i'd want it all to myself and not work again.

If you are going to win, you are going to win.  Most people win with 5 or less picks.  Pools seem to win with 40 picks or more but it seems like more people win as compared to pools.  If there is a 1 in a 100,000,000 chance of winning, 40 picks wont do much cause there are still 99,999,960 numbers that you did not cover!
