Keno to debut in Ohio on Monday
Keno to debut in Ohio on MondayPosted: 8/1/2008 9:08:14 PM Critics and Keno players say it's Ohio's closest thing yet to casino gambling. Instead of a lottery drawing daily or once a week, Keno games will be played every four minutes, from 11 a.m. until 1:44 the next morning, approximating bar and restaurant hours. Eight hundred bars, restaurants, bowling alleys and racetracks will be equipped with computer terminals for placing bets beginning Monday. The number of locations is expected to grow to 2,000. On a betting slip, Keno players will either choose auto pick numbers or choose their own. In each game they can pick up to 10 numbers, bet up to $20 and win up to $100,000. A bettor can let his numbers ride for up to 20 consecutive games, which would mean gambling up to $300 an hour. The rapidity of the games and potential for winning and losing concerns Keno's critics and excites the game's players. "They say, 'hey, this is really a gambling game, something different from what the Ohio Lottery has done up until now,'" said Dan Metelsky, Lottery Sales Director. "They love it," said Alecia Tomasch of the Red Circle Bar and Lanes in Parma, one of the locations that will begin Keno play Monday. "It's the Vegas thing. They really want casino gambling and this is one step closer." Lottery officials say Keno is expected to hit $292 million in sales its first year making it second only to the lottery's Pick 3, which had $364 million in sales last year. That would generate profits of $73 million which Governor Ted Strickland has said is critically needed to help fund education in Ohio. Source: WKYC

The Orleans and Gold Coast in Vegas have better Keno payoffs* than most and Ohio's 10-spot payoff is at least comparable because the jackpot ($100,000) is the same and Ohio paying $5 for matching zero numbers and $2 compared to their $1 for matching 5 numbers. The 6 to 9 matches highly favor the casinos.
The 7-spot in Ohio pays $1 for matching 3 numbers and most casino games pay nothing and you get your $1 back for matching 4 numbers and Ohio pays $5.
Overall though the casino Keno games offer much better payoffs on the 3, 4, 5, and 6-spots the experienced players play. The Ohio payoffs are slightly better than the payoffs I saw in Michigan and WVA.
* By better payoffs, I mean matching all the numbers. The 3, 4, 5, and 6-spots pay $45, $160, $750. and $2000 in those casinos while most pay $42, $125, $500, and $1500.

Here is the payment info from the Ohio Lottery website regarding the Keno game.

Prize value based on $1 wager. For wagers over $1, multiply the prize amount by the amount wagered.
Themaximum prize payout for a single draw game for each of the 10, 9, or 8spots top prize will be $20 million. In the event of multiple winnersfor the top prize in a single drawing, in which the total payout forthat drawing would exceed $20 million, each ticket would be awarded aproportional share of the $20 million jackpot prize cap by dividingeach ticket’s winning jackpot prize total by the total of all winningprizes to determine each ticket’s proportional share of the $20million.

Not to stray too far off-topic, but the El Cortez and Fitzgerald's consistently offer the highest overall payoff percentages across the board for live Keno in Las Vegas. Some friends of mine have had issues with Keno tournament conduct at the Fitz, though, and I avoid playing there.

That was the source for the data used in my computations. Thanks for the paste. Maybe one of these days I'll find the time to post this data on my website.

| How do I play Keno? |
 |
Keno is played using a field of numbers from 1 through 80. You can select - or choose Quick Pick - up to 10 numbers in that field. The Lottery's computer randomly chooses 20 winning numbers between 1 and 80 for each game of Keno and displays those winning numbers on the Keno Information Monitor. You win based upon how many winning numbers you match. |
 |
| |
| The Lottery's computer, protected 24 hours a day by security cameras, generates random sets of 20 numbers. The central computer "locks in" on a set of those numbers, which then appears on the Keno TV monitor. |

|
| What makes Keno so much fun |
Keno is fun because it's easy to play, and it's really your game. You decide how many numbers you want to play, and the amount of your wager! You can win in a variety of ways - by matching some, all or - in some cases - none of the numbers you have chosen.* And Keno gives you the chance to win up to $100,000 per drawing. Best of all, Keno is played at your convenience - there's a drawing every four minutes - so there is always a new game coming up! |

| Keno Bonus |
| NOW WIN UP TO $1,000,000 PLAYING KENO!
Play the Maryland Lottery's Keno Bonus every time you play Keno. You could increase your Keno winnings by up to 10 times the original amount. You could even win up to $1,000,000!
Simply mark the "YES" box on your Keno playslip where it says Keno Bonus. Then sit back and watch the action to see if your winnings multiply. Determining your Keno Bonus wager is easy. It's simply the very same amount that you wagered on Keno. If you wager $2 on Keno, for instance, then your Keno Bonus wager is an additional $2.
Keno Bonus draws first, with a wheel that spins and stops to reveal which multiplier, if any, applies to the next Keno game. Possible multipliers are 3, 4, 5, and 10.
The Keno game draws. If your ticket is a winner for that Keno game, multiply the amount you won by the Keno Bonus multiplier. The answer is how much money you'll actually collect. For example, if you win $10 at Keno, and the multiplier for that game is 3, then you collect $30. If the multiplier is 4, you collect $40, and so on. Thanks to Keno / Keno Bonus, you can now win up to $1,000,000 playing Keno!
Play the new Keno Bonus and watch the Bonus Wheel multiply your winnings by up to 10 times the original amount!

I love playing Keno every day, but I am skeptical of a Keno lottery with so many
draws each day and with such a good availability.
It's highly addictive and some people will empty their pockets much faster than
with a ordinary lottery.

Non-commercial, nothing to sell, no ads, for informational purposes only. Data hasn't changed since posted. I've never done anything with the bonus portion, though, and it's good to have the actual multiplier odds on hand - thanks. One of these days.....
