A special promotion is giving Missouri Lottery Pick 3 players a shot at doubling their chances of winning cash in the Midday drawing.

From Oct. 19 through Nov. 15, the Lottery will draw the winning Pick 3 numbers along with a second drawing from among three white balls and one orange ball. If the orange ball is drawn, the Lottery will draw a bonus set of Pick 3 numbers, giving players a second chance to win cash to win from the same ticket purchase.

Even though there are no balls utilized in the Missouri Lottery's computerized drawing system, the lottery did not explain the reference of a "ball" in their promotional announcement.

If the state lottery is switching to a genuine ball drawing for the promotional period, there was no mention of it in the announcement.

"The orange ball will be drawn at least four times during the promotion," said online product manager Scott White.

"If for some reason it doesn't get drawn four times, we'll continue the promotion until it does."

In NY about once a year they INCREASE the payout on Numbers (3way) and Win4 by 20% for about 5 days.  I have hit a couple of times then and it is cool to hit and win extra money!!!

They do this in nj in February or March. The problem is it messes up my algorithms and when I did win during a double drawing it was always on the first draw.

I am GUESSING that a ball machine will be only used to draw the orange ball because it would be cumbersome to write an extra program to keep track of what color balls are still "in rotation". They can draw the first number, run the machine, and then if it's orange they run the computer program a second time. I'm curious if any of this is done live.

The Missouri Lottery does not use ball drawings for anything.  It is a computer pick, and they CALL it a ball.

In fact, they call ALL the numbers picked by their computer "balls", which is pretty mystifying.

I guess they want people to THINK that there are real balls being used, which raises the question, why are they so afraid of reminding people that a computer picks the numbers?
