Apparently not a robbery attempt, policeman says
The man who won Alaska's first half-million-dollar lottery was attacked on a downtown Anchorage street yesterday afternoon with a tire iron or metal pipe, according to police.
Police say Alec Ahsoak, 53, was attacked when a man approached him to ask if he was the man who won the $500,000 jackpot.
Whether the attack was motivated by Ahsoak's winning the lottery or the widely distributed reports that he is a three-time convicted sex offender was unclear.
"There was no apparent attempt at robbery," police lieutenant Dave Parker said. "He was struck eight to 10 times, and then he threw his Pepsi at the assailant and he ran for Phyllis' Cafe and the assailant ran off."
By yesterday evening, Ahsoak had been discharged from the hospital and police had taken a man and a woman into custody, Parker said.
The man has been identified as 20-year-old Brandon J. Hughes of Los Angeles. Hughes was charged in the attack Tuesday afternoon on Ahsoak, according to KTUU-TV in Anchorage.
Police say Hughes did not know Ahsoak.
Ahsoak told officers he had been stopped by a white man believed to be about 21 and wearing a blue-and-white checked shirt, blue jeans and a white baseball cap as he entered the Fifth Avenue Mall. The stranger asked if he was the lottery winner, Ahsoak said he was, and then went into the mall.
When he walked out minutes later carrying a Pepsi, the man approached him and began hitting him on the head with the weapon, police said.
Ahsoak was transported to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries, which did not appear to be life-threatening, police said.
Ahsoak was convicted in 1993 of molesting two girls under the age of 13. He was sentenced to four years in prison, according to court records.
In March 2000, police arrested him again for molesting a different young girl he was baby-sitting. Through a plea bargain, Ahsoak was sentenced to six years in prison on a single count of sexual abuse of a minor.
Prosecutors in that case dropped another sex abuse charge and a charge of failing to register as a sex offender.

What I don't get is:
1) Why do sex offenders have to register themselves? Why don't the courts do it?
2) What's somebody doing hiring a 45-yr-old (at the time), I assume non-relative, to babysit their daughter?
On a side note, I don't condone violence towards anybody, regardless of how heinous their acts may be. We have the legal system to deal with such persons. If the blows had been sufficient enough to kill the man, it would still be murder, so this is still assault. Vigilante justice is not what the framers of the constitution had in mind when drafting that document.
That being said, it's disgusting that a two-time convicted felon won a lottery, but numbers don't know criminal histories.

Bah. Some a$$-hat trying to make himself famous. There are plenty of criminals in L.A., if he was so tough. Modern "education" teaches a version of history so fictionalized, it should be followed by "TM"
They're warning me about Osama or whatever. Picture me buying the scam; I say "never!".

Disgusting that this man is still out amongst children, let alone he won $500,000. "Those who hurt my little children are stench in my nostrils"........GOD He will get his! I could never be like this dude because kiddie pooh should not be touched...that is why I couldn't even be a pediatrician or emergency room doc who has to examine young rape victims or do the physical checkups. Let women docs do that...that is, unless the woman doc is a lesbian because in that case, that is the same as a man looking at a woman's private parts. Well enough of that.
Sure, my first thoughts like yours was, "Wow, this is like the 2nd or 3rd time in less than a year that a convicted sex offender has hit it big in the lottery...what about good guys (and for you women) and girls winning?!" But then again, I am reminded as I look upon the back of a lottery playslip that the only thing that matters is if a person is not prohibited from playing whether they paid their buck for the winning numbers for that particular draw. Winning the lottery is not like running for and winning political office or CEO of a company...in those cases, ones background is extremely relevant. A homeless but smart bum could play and win the lottery...in some states, an illegal alien who not too long ago crossed the ocean stowed away or who jumped the border down south could play and win...and of course, we know that despicable criminals can play and win. Good on him and them. But my thought is that the initial win is not as important as what a person does with the winnings down the road...will he meet the same fate of other lottery winner LOSERS who blow it or will we never hear from him again or only in some positive light like Brad Duke? I don't have time to worry about other people's lives like that, so all I say is good on him...and hope for my time in the spotlight to come about. Forget the formulas...you only win when you're lucky! I'm one lucky mofo...NOW give me MONEY!

Old School - I hope in some sick way you were being sarcastic. First of all, when you go to a doctor, you have no idea if he or she is homosexual, and it shouldn't matter to you. The majority of all sexual offenses are committed by heterosexual White males like Ahsoak. There is a huge difference between being gay/lesbian and being a sexual predator. The first is none of my business and the other is a criminal who is hurting people & breaking the law.

What does intelligence have to do with winning the lottery? Also, homeless people are not "bums." There are families who, while I'm typing this post, have just received eviction notices because the rent is past due. A person who mooches off his rich relatives or a trust fund brat who parties all the time and contributes nothing to his community is no less of a bum. Having a roof over your head and food on your table doesn't make you a better person.

I don't know if that statement is true or not.I do know that a lot of child molesters prefer young boys.Either way,though,they should be sentenced to life without parole so they can't molest other children.

My choice of vocabulary comes from having just watched that Kiefer Sutherland movie where he was a serial rapist and I think it was Sallie Fields whose daughter was killed by him and she killed him in the end. That term "kiddie pooh" is just like an annoying song you hear in an elevator that plays over and over in your mind...by next week, I hope I will have forgotten it.
Anyway, I am sorry a touched off a nerve when I called homeless people bums. I know that people facing that predicament are there for many different reasons, sometimes not of their own fault. Never implied that people with a roof over their head are better than anyone...if you got that from my post, you're really digging on a tangent that isn't even there.
Oh and intelligence doesn't have anything to do with winning the lottery...the point I was making by saying that is that even a homeless but smart bum (person who happens to drown his/her sorrows with cheap alcohol and/or illicit drugs) who decides to buy a lottery ticket can win the lottery. I hope the PC police are fine with that explanation. Forget the formulas...you only win when you're lucky! I'm one lucky mofo...NOW give me MONEY!
