Ticket worth $400,000 purchased in Mechanicsburg, Pa.

A $400,000 winning Powerball ticket from the May 28, 2008 — purchased in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania — remains unclaimed.

The ticket and prize will expire on May 28 — one year from the date of the drawing.

"As of today, the ticket has not been claimed," said Lottery Executive Director Ed Trees. "We encourage players to check their old tickets in hopes the winner of this substantial prize will come forward to claim it before time runs out in two weeks."

The Powerball ticket correctly matched all five white balls, 10-18-22-37-45, for a $200,000 prize, and because the ticket was purchased with the PowerPlay option, the multiplier for that evening's drawing — two — doubled the prize won to $400,000, less 25 percent federal withholding.

The winning ticket was sold at Karns Foods, 4870 Carlisle Pike in Mechanicsburg. The store will receive a $500 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

The Pennsylvania Lottery said the holder of the winning ticket needs to sign the back of the ticket, call the lottery at (717) 702-8146 and file a claim within the next two weeks at lottery headquarters in Middletown, Dauphin County, or at any of Lottery's seven regional offices.

Claims may be filed at headquarters Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., and from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. at regional lottery offices.

Unclaimed, expired lottery prizes remain in the Lottery Fund and are used to support programs benefiting older Pennsylvanians.

I wonder if the retailer that sold the ticket will still get the $500 bonus for selling the ticket if nobody claims the money.

Very sad.  $400,000 would make one person(s) very happy.   I hope someone claims the winning ticket.

I'm sure someone has tried to make an unsuccessful claim by now.  Use to be such claims would make the news, people who claimed to have been traveling through that town on the particular day the ticket was sold and decided to buy a lottery ticket at the particular store that sold it but forgot about the it until they read about it in the news and now can't find it.

What a shame if it becomes null and void especially at this time  of great economic strife. I hope the owner comes forward before deadline.

What a waste!  Probably a first time player...and they haven't even checked their ticket.  One thing is for certain....whoever it was, they didn't need the money...because people who do, actually CHECK their tickets!!!

Maybe they had a reason for not checking their tickets.Like death or disability.

I believe this For99c.  I see the clerks handle the machine when it jams up and I don't think they cancel all those tickets, they don't seem to like doing the job at the lottery machine in the first place.  I don't go to stores like that anymore, I go to one place to play where they LIKE me, call me by name, take my numbers seriously, gives me my tickets the exact way I have them, sneak in a winner every once in a while for me by doubling my wager on a number, and give me freebies like tickets and packs of cigarettes.  Yeah, I know, stop smoking.  Mind you its the OWNER of the place that gives me freebies, I wouldn't take something just from a worker.  Nice place, seems like the whole neigborhood goes there now, they have two lottery machines.

Then again, I found a box of Powerball tickets that my sister had in her room, and I looked up some of the tickets and threw out the rest that was out dated without checking.  I didn't want to cry.  :-).  I TOLD her to hand over the tickets when she plays, she forgets and cleans out her bag and throws them all over.  Geez!!  No she didn't win on any tickets that I uncovered, and I told her she should save her money.  Some folks never win.  Every time I let her in on one of my numbers I never win.

Yes, indeed, the selling retailer does receive their cut (probably already did, since Powerball headquarters knows, after the drawing, exactly where all the winning tickets were sold at) regardless of whether the $400K winning ticket is claimed.  Although most retailers put a big sign in their storefront window hoping that if the ticket is in the posession of a repeat customer that this person will see the poster and be prompted to check their old tickets!

Regardless, ooh, I'll take that unclaimed $400k 2nd place prize -- I need and want it!!! I'll treat the $264K (after typical massive required 35% fed and state tax deductions) with great respect, giggling, and glee while paying off all my debts AND support a euphoric smile on my face for a year for the remaining 5-digits of invested savings.

Hurray!
