'Mind reader' will predict UK Lotto numbers on show Wednesday

Sep. 7, 2009, 9:30 p.m.

UK National Lottery UK National Lottery: 'Mind reader' will predict UK Lotto numbers on show Wednesday

So-called "mind reader" Derren Brown is to perform his most audacious stunt yet — predicting the lottery results on his British TV show.

The television personality plans to forecast the Wednesday night draw as it is screened live on BBC1.

And the bearded illusionist will rattle lotto chiefs by telling viewers how to do it. Sadly, Derren will be filmed at a secret location as he predicts the balls tumbling out of the National Lottery machine — when it's too late for lottery players to buy a ticket.

Derren, 38, is so confident of success he has convinced Channel 4 chiefs to screen the stunt live across all its channels including FilmFour and More4.

They have also given him another show on Friday night where he will give hints on how its done.  A show insider said, "Derren is extremely confident he has worked out how to predict those magic balls.

"Of course the thing with this is not just the excitement of him doing it — but the fact he'll tell people how to do it.

"Magicians famously never give up their secrets and are frowned upon if they do.  And the lotto bosses won't be happy if he really has found the secret to predicting the National Lottery."

The stunt is one of four "events" Derren has lined up.  Some are so secret even senior execs at Channel 4 don't know what they are.

Next week's show How to Control The Nation could see thousands of viewers unable to get up from their seats after watching a special film.  Derren recently said, "A piece of media which will be played to the viewing nation will have the effect of rendering them immobile.  Not all of them, but it will basically stick a lot of people to their seats.  It's safe."

Derren once played a game of Russian Roulette live and also convinced a member of the public to rob a security van.

But the new show could be a trick — just like Séance filmed in 2004 which implied it was being shown live.

Derren revealed at the end of the programme that the séance had been a set up.  Let's hope Derren's remembered to buy a lotto ticket before Wednesday's show at 10:35 pm.

Would you mind telling what numbers are going to come for the next Super Lotto Plus drawing?

Assuming he does publicly announce the winning numbers before the live TV drawing, I predict the following:

He will not predict all the numbers correctly

Big Smile

Also, if he does something like putting the numbers in an envelope before the drawing and then revealing them after the drawing, that does not count because that is a common magician's trick/illusion. For it to be real, he must publicly say what the numbers will be before the live drawing takes place.

Also, the story said he will predict them too late for players to buy a ticket for the drawing...if one assumes he could actually predict the winning numbers, it would probably not be worth playing because so many people would play that number set that the payout would be small.

Yes, i agree when there are a lot of people playing these same numbers the payout will be  very small.  I sure would like to see him Predict those numbers.

Hmmm. I guess we'll see if he can do what he claims on Wednesday. Unless, the whole think is staged and just a trick.

Obviously this guy Derren Brown is going to perform some type of illusion or stunt for entertainment because if he was for real he would simply buy a winning ticket and display it after the drawing.

He's probably going to display some numbers after the drawings that he with some kind of an illusion or trick will have convinced his audience that he wrote down before the drawing.  If he does tell his audience how he did it, he will only be exposing the illusion not how to predict the next winning numbers.

I can predict the numbers for Tonight's MM drawing with high accuracy, maybe 100%

I predict that they won't be the numbers on my ticket!

Works almost every time!

If Derren Brown is a "mind reader", who's mind is he reading to get the numbers?  Maybe he should expose that person. Wink

Yeah, this is an old trick, that clown Cris Angel did it awhile back too. Of course he won't say what the numbers will be until after they're drawn, because he doesn't know them yet.LOL

With odds like 1 in 175,711,536 how can I lose?!

You can't predict random.

If it is sealed in an envelope, then of course he will not open the envelope sealed before the drawing.  He will open an envelope that was secretly prepared after the drawing.

The only legitimate way he could prove that he predicted the draw results would be to purchase a ticket before the drawing, and claim the jackpot afterwards.  Any other method will be a simple trick -- a mockery of real prediction theory.

Forgot to mention, the other way he could prove a legitimate prediction would be to post his prediction on the Lottery Post Predictions Board.  That is something that can't be scammed, and forces all predictions to be posted before the drawing.
