Pa. Lottery to pull the plug on Super 7

Pennsylvania Lottery

Pennsylvania Lottery officials announced the final drawing for Super 7 will be later this month, but it doesn't seem like players will miss the game.

Officials cite higher jackpots in the Mega Millions drawing as the decision to cancel the Super 7 game. The last chance for Pennsylvania residents to play will be April 27.

Super 7 was successful for the past year, Pennsylvania Lottery Deputy Press Secretary Kirstin Alvanitakis said, but people are more interested in games with bigger jackpots. The Mega Millions jackpot starts at $12 million, while Super 7 starts at $1 million.

The game replaced Match 6 and originally ran from 1986 to 1995. It debuted for a second time on March 11, 2009. It currently has an annuity jackpot of $7.9 million and a cash jackpot of $3.8 million. If no one wins the April 27 jackpot, that money will be distributed among the lower-tier winners.

"We're always looking at games and changing them out," Alvanitakis said. "We want to keep things fresh and exciting for our players."

Nam Lee, owner of Min's Market on South Pershing Avenue, said hardly any of his customers play Super 7. He guessed about 80 percent of his customers pick numbers for Powerball and only 3 percent play Super 7.

"Not too many people play that," he said. "People are playing Mega Millions and Powerball."

Wendy Hinton, of Zhou's Grocery Inc. on South Queen Street, also said most of her customers play the Mega Million game.

"People don't play (Super 7)," she said. "They might come in because they won't be able to play it anymore."

The Cash 5 game is the most popular at Dean's News Stand on East Market Street. Owner Dean Ritter said he sells about $10,000 worth of lottery tickets each week, and almost no one plays Super 7.

"There's just way too many numbers," he said.

The largest Super 7 jackpot, an $8.26 million annuity, was won by a Lancaster County man from the May 29, 2009, drawing. A jackpot-winning ticket worth $775,000 cash from the Dec. 4, 2009, drawing has yet to be claimed. The winning ticket was sold in Marietta, Lancaster County. Super 7 winners have one year from the drawing date to claim prizes.

Super 7 is a $2 terminal-based game offering an annuity jackpot that begins at $1 million. To win the jackpot, a player must match seven of the 11 winning numbers drawn by Lottery.

When Ohio ended games in the past, if there were no jackpot winners in the last game  the jackpot money was divided among the lower prize winners.  I played the last games of SuperLotto and Lot'O Play and because there were no jackpot winners the prizes I won were 2-5 times their regular amounts.  I wonder if PA will do the same with Super7.

Ohio now has Classic Lotto(6/49 and jackpots of $1-10M) and is played on MON,WED and SAT as is PowerBall which goes on sale tomorrow so it could suffer a similar fate.

If no jackpot winner the jackpot money will be rolled to the lower tiered prize winners.  Saw this in the local paper last night.

If Pa lottery wanted to keep the game, they could have moved the drawing dates to Mon Thurs, of course that's when they run mix n match.

Md lottery moved their multimatch game from Wed Sat when they added powerball to Mon Thurs.  This game (Md' Multi MAtch) has better odds than the Pa Super 7. Pa used to have the match 6 that was just like Md's Multimatch. Plus in Md you can claim anonymously. The only drawback is Md imposes an income tax on all winners in and out of state (the price  of anonymity, I guess)

PA Super 7 :For $2 you pick 7 numbers (or 7 numbers are chosen for you in a QP), 11 numbers are drawn. Odds of winning the jackpot 1 in 7,287,298  the range of numbers 1 to 77

Md Multi Match:  For $2, you get 18 numbers (3 lines of 6 with a range of 1 to 43) (you can pick the first 6 and the other 2 lines of 6 are randomly chosen for you) Probability of winning the jackpot per line is 1 in 6,096,454. However, you get 3 lines per $2.00 play, so the prob goes to 1 in 2,032,151 per play.

Drhymes- Correct on the stats and pay per play lines. THe difference. PA PAYS more cashola on the jackpot for super 7 and its other tiers. It starts at a much higher level then MD's Match6. Not begrudging the game, just emphasizing the difference in funds for cash.

I do wonder as well if the Tier downwards payout will be an incintive for a last hoorah. I personally liked the game over the Quinto...but its a matter of preference....

PA really needs to reconsider the Treasure hunt game being revised or create a more inticing payout....

So what, they're just going to get rid of it? No replacement? They surely can't be losing money on Super 7. Do they honestly expect to make more money by just getting rid of game with nothing taking it's place? From a standpoint of revenue, this is dumb move.

This game lacked intelligence, wit, and appeal because it was not a true "keno" game ala the ones New York & Michigan have, which as I have stated here for several years, would be a smash in Pennsylvania.

Players rejected it by not playing it, pure and simple.  There was nothing "super" about it-- the fact of the cancellation speaks for itself.

Maybe they will roll out a 10/20/60 game; now that would be interesting and profit generating!

They change games in PA more often than I change radio stations to avoid annoying GEICO ads! Every few years their local Lotto type game is dropped and some other one added which is just a re-hash of the previous. They have been through Keystone Lotto, Match 6, Super 6, Super 7, Lucky For Life, and whatever else. There are too many game icons (that's ok) jammed onto my screen of my picking program so I can drop the 7 and push in the Mega. I wonder what new game they bring in "Keystone Super Match 8 For Life??" Nobody cares about your local State Lotto game when you have Mega and Powerball!!

LckyLary

Side Note - MATCH 6 and Multi-Match: those tickets are/were 1 line you pick 6 numbers or QP, the 2nd and 3rd line are FORCED QP, and there is often the case where many of the tickets are UNABLE to win some of the prize levels other than Jackpot. i.e. to match 10 numbers when only 6 are drawn, some of the QP would have to be duplicate and the QP doesn't account for that.

grave

7 numbers is alot...but i guess the people in pa are glad thats it's gone...

Yeah I am pissed and sent them an email as if it will matter. I like the Super 7  A LOT more than the powerball or mega millions game, which doesn't pay crap out and hasn't for 10 years. At least I won like $30 with the Super 7 a few times. I rarely play PB or MM because I have not gotten more than $8 usually yet. I also enjoyed lucky for life, and match 6 was OK. I actually can't stand PB or MM due to the constant losses. So I guess PA Lottery will be saving me a lot of money playing jackpots games and I can concentrate more on Big 4 wich I won 3 times straight/boxed now in 3 years playing only one ticket each time.

Also with games like Lucky For Life I got 4 and 5 numbers several times, as well as 4 out of 6 on the Match 6 several times. I was also very close to matching all number and being off by one digit many times, which is actually more frustrating.

Well that is because there is a lot of "mass stupidity" in the world and people are drawn by false hype. There is a lot of numbers in Super 7 but the odds are still WAY better than Powerball or MM. I hope to win the last draw as I am a loyal player, and leave it to PA to get rid of the fun games and keep the crap ones. But I am betting that some idiot who never played before wins it who played only because it was the last draw. I deserve to win it!
