$174 MILLION: Tomorrow's Powerball lottery jackpot red hot

Powerball

By Todd Northrop

The multi-state Powerball lottery drawing took place Wednesday night without any jackpot winners, causing the new jackpot for Saturday's drawing to grow to an estimated $174 million, with a cash option of $110 million.

Saturday night was the 10th consecutive drawing without a jackpot winner.

Even though there were no jackpot winners, 3 lucky players matched the first 5 numbers for a $1,000,000 prize: 1 from Idaho, 1 from Iowa, and 1 from North Carolina.

None of the second prize tickets was purchased with the Power Play option.

42 tickets matched four white numbers plus the Powerball and won $10,000. Of those tickets, 7 also were purchased with the Power Play option, increasing the prize to $40,000.

The Powerball winning numbers for Wednesday, September 19, were 1, 5, 8, 39, and 50, with Powerball number 23.

The last Powerball jackpot to reach or exceed the size of the upcoming Saturday drawing was last month, on August 15, when Donald Lawson, a Railroad Engineer from Lapeer, Michigan, won $337 million and chose to take the cash option of $224.7 million — the largest Powerball cash payout in the history of the game.  (See Michigan railroad engineer claims $337M Powerball lottery jackpot, Lottery Post, August 31, 2012.)

A total of 694,712 tickets across the USA won more than $7.9 million in prizes playing "America's Game" Wednesday. 108,142 of those winning tickets were purchased with the Power Play option, which increased their prizes up to 4 times.

When a Powerball ticket is purchased with the Power Play option for an extra $1 per ticket, any non-jackpot prize is increased by a set amount.  For example, second-place Power Play-enabled tickets matching five numbers but not the Powerball are increased from $1 million to $2 million.

Powerball is now played in 42 states, plus the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are Wednesdays and Saturdays at 11:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

The Powerball winning numbers are published at USA Mega (www.usamega.com) minutes after the drawing takes place.

Hmmm, looks like only a little over 15.5% of players played the Power Play option. I guess I'm in the minority.

But I know if I was one of those 42 players who got 4+1, I'd sure be glad to be one of the seven of them who spent the extry buck to get 40k instead of 10k.

And even as unlikely as it is, you're waaaaay more likely to hit 4+1 (1 in 648,976) than the Jackpot (1 in 175,223,510).

RJOh's avatarRJOh

If nobody wins Saturday a few more of those players who are reluctant to spend $2 on a ticket will be buying a PB ticket for Tuesday's drawing.  I was one and already I'm giving up buying 20 MM tickets tonight to buy 10 PB tickets for tomorrow.

California doesn't have PowerBall, if a Californian wins it he will have brought his ticket out of state, maybe in New York.

I hear you Ridge. I'd like to double down with the power play but I just can't afford it. I play both MM and PB on every drawing so it gets expensive besides, I've never won more than $7.00 on any game. No confidence.

I can see not playing the Power Play if you're buying a lot of tickets, that it could become cost prohibitive but I only play two lines so it's worth it to me. I'm in on every drawing too and I think I'd be pissed if I won 10k, knowing that another buck would have made it 40k.

But then I'm always swingin' for the fences.

Good luck!

Speaking of the crazy odds, I read this one recently from another article and it just cracks me up:

"...a person who drives 10 miles to buy a Powerball ticket is 16 times more likely to die in a car crash than to win the big jackpot."

I'm still convinced I'm gonna hit the jackpot though dammit!!!  LOL!! Hyper

To me, it seems crazy NOT to play the Power Play, or even The Megaplier in MegaMillions.

While it's true The PP costs an extra buck, I wouldnt want to be someone that heard these words:"If you had spent a dollar more, that one million dollars you won would've become two million."  Knowing you didnt win an extra million by not spending an additional dollar has to take away from some of the euphoria one surely would feel by having won a million bucks.

Wow, Ronnie. Spending $164/wk. for a shot on this particular game is pretty brave. Gotta give it to ya, though...you're much braver than I'll ever be. If you don't mind me asking, what kind of returns are you seeing on your expense? I mean, are you averaging 2-3 numbers on the same line at least? What Ronnie posts may or may not be what he actually plays.  After all, why would he really want to give away such prized information as the winning numbers, if he really knows what they are.

So, the request for information on the returns on his investments sounds to me like a fair request that could also, possibly help Ronnie to stop for a moment and  take a closer look at his investments habits, and see how he is doing, in-case he has not done so previously.

I don't see nosiness, as Ronnie voluntarily tendered the information base, that premised the curriosities.

Ouch, Ronnie316, it must hurt to KNOW that had you played MM (using at least that # sequence in your typical periodic-draw purchase of 41 rows) on that date you would have had the opportunity to have received the solo annuitized jackpot of $29M pre-taxes!!!

Not really, I'm happy to simulate a win and understand the odds. The only guarantee of winning with 28 numbers is a full wheel at a cost of $98,280. however a 4 if 4 wheel has a 1 in 4 chance at a cost of $4931.

It just so happened that the 4 if 4 wheel was on target with 5 of 5 that day, so I do wish (of course) that I was playing that wheel that day but it took a full 18 draws to get that hit and I had no real expectations of hitting that day nor did I have the cash for so much on so many draws. ($88,758.)

Lets just hope with some planning it can happen on a live ticket in the futue.

btw, the 41 line 2 if 2 wheel is a 1 in 2000+ long shot for hitting 5 of 5, but I play it anyway because its much   BETTER ODDS than a 1 in 3.8 million QP ticket. lol. lol.

I hardly ever buy a PB ticket, so I bought a QP last night cause the clerk made me laugh and asked me to buy one. At first i declined but then said go ahead. I hate when it's so close like one off.

Winning numbers,

2-16-18-40-42  PB-33

My ticket,

3-17-18-27-39   PB-34

Had all of your close numbers been right on (3-17, PB-34), you would of had a 3+1 = $100

Just be happy there wasn't one more close number, that would have been good for $10K.  Crying

You can find something to be happy about even in losing. Thumbs Up

You're seeing it the way a terminal might see it, being close doesn't count, numbers are either winners or losers.
