$250 MILLION: Powerball lottery jackpot surges

Powerball

By Todd Northrop

There was no jackpot winner in the Saturday night drawing of the multi-state Powerball game, causing the grand prize to increase to an estimated $250 million for Wednesday's drawing.

Saturday was the 13th consecutive drawing without a jackpot winner.  The current jackpot run started October 6 as a $40 million jackpot.

The estimated cash value for the new jackpot is $166.8 Million.  After-tax cash and annuity prize amounts are reported state-by-state on the Jackpot Analysis page at USA Mega, a web site devoted to the Powerball and Mega Millions multi-state lottery games.

This is the largest Powerball jackpot since Aug. 15, 2012, when 44-year-old railroad engineer Donald Lawson of Lapeer, Michigan, won a $337 million Powerball jackpot (see Michigan railroad engineer claims $337M Powerball lottery jackpot, Lottery Post, August 31, 2012).

Players should note that jackpot amounts are conservative estimates provided by the lotteries, and are often somewhat higher by the time the drawing occurs.

Even though there were no jackpot winners, 6 lucky players matched the first 5 numbers for a $1,000,000 prize: 1 from Florida, 1 from Illinois, 2 from New York, and 2 from Texas.

Of all the second-prize winners, only one ticket from Texas was purchased with the Power Play option for an extra $1.  Because they purchased the Power Play, that particular ticket is now worth $2 million.

51 tickets matched four white numbers plus the Powerball and won $10,000.  Of those tickets, 7 were purchased with the Power Play option, increasing the prize to $40,000.

When a Powerball ticket is purchased with the Power Play option for an extra $1 per ticket, any non-jackpot prize is increased according to a fixed prize schedule, which can be found on the Powerball Drawing Detail page at USA Mega, as well as on the Powerball Prize Payouts page at Lottery Post.

The Powerball winning numbers for Saturday, November 17, were 3, 15, 27, 58, and 59, with Powerball number 20.

Following the Saturday drawing, the Powerball annuity jackpot estimate was raised $36 million from its previous amount of $214 million. The cash value was raised by $23.8 million from its previous amount of $143 million.

The next Powerball drawing will take place Wednesday evening at 10:59 pm EDT.

Powerball is now played in 42 states, plus the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are Wednesdays and Saturdays at 11:00 p.m. Eastern Time.  Tickets cost $2 each.

Powerball lottery results are published within minutes of the drawing at USA Mega.

I was offered a misprint and declined and just bought my regular quick picks and self pick and then when I got home and thought about how past winners won on misprints I  called the store up to see if the $3.00 ticket was still there and it was so I went back out into the cold and bought it!

Figured it's Ohio's time to win since we hardly ever win any large jackpots anymore. Smile

They are holding $100's of millions. If they could figure out a way to award a few extra million each draw regardless if the JP was won or not I think more people would be interested in playing.

The last time I threw $20. bucks down on it I turned over the ticket and realized I was only going to get $100. dollars if I hit a 3+1. I felt insulted by the muilt million $$ giant and I don't understand why anyone plays??

Ronnie316

Do people have ANY concept of the fact that the odds of 3+1 are 1 in 12,245........   ???????????

That means you can spend $24,490. for a break even chance at winning $100. ...................

                                                      What?

Ronnie316

OH.... and the odds for a 4+0 which also pays $100. are even greater at 1 in 19,088..........

Ohio has stopped putting the odds of winning on their PowerBall play slips while continuing to put them all the other games' play slips.  I think it may be because PB ticket cost $2 per line and the odds on the other games are based on a dollar per line and based on cost per line those odds might confuse or discourage customers from playing PB.

OOpsadaisey........ Try and hold together Original Bey. I stand corrected by RJOh as the PB play slip does in fact say "ODDS PER PLAY" which is very good news because now you only need to trade $19k to get $100.

That's part of my new strategy.  Not satisfied with the number groups the lottery give you, make up your own, after all the drawing will only be using groups of 5 and 1.

I won't be able to reduce my groups to six, but I think I can get smaller with some rule changes.  For example, if I have only used numbers in that group that had hit in the last sixteen drawings I would have done better.

Of course Thrifty, you are the master of the Positive Energy Flow and you will win the JP someday...

Is that what the polls are telling you?  Don't be like Romney the night of the drawings.

Stop loss? Sounds millitary to me.

I gamble until I am exhausted and then I use the rest to pay the bills.

Seriously though, I run a strict budget no matter the JP size as the size of the JP doesn't change the odds.

The reality of playing the lottery is that we are going to lose money in order to win big someday. I set a lottery stop loss limit to minimize shock to my finances.

I Agree!

Budgeting keeps us all in for the long haul.

I have my finger on the pulse of LP and Thrifty is taking a commanding lead in the run for a JP.......

Chasing jackpot rollovers by playing multiple lines is not a smart idea because it is a matter of time before someone that never played the lottery wins the whole thing with a single line.

The Connecticut asset managers?

I play the lottery, but i am afraid of winning a lottery jackpot someday. I usually play to win a second prize on MM or PB. Winning a big lottery jackpot is not a good idea because I can't be anonymous in New York.

Sometimes it weeks before I can hit a 3ball in box play at 50 cents. In a moment of lucidity I ask myself, why am I playing the Powerball again? 3ball odds are 1:1000 and further reduced if you're going after a box hit. If I struggle doing that imagine 175 mil to 1!

Claim the prize as an "entity" and have a representative do all the claiming and appearing???

You have to think small whenever you play jackpot games. I really play to win $1,000,000 on mega millions or powerball. Winning a jackpot will be great if can remain anonymous in New York.

Perhaps if all lottery players everywhere agree, they will just give him the JP NO ticket needed//What?

I Agree! I dont even consider the bonus money, so my odds are 1 in 5.1 million or BETTER.
