Apparent Arizona winner captured on video the moment he learned of win

Powerball

Several store customers and clerk saw winning ticket, verified winning numbers

Apparent winner purchased ticket in Arizona but checked ticket in Maryland

Includes video report

A man, who appeared to be a construction or highway worker, walked into a Prince George's County, Maryland, Exxon Thursday afternoon and — according to witnesses — walked out a multi-multi-millionaire.

Employees and customers at Marlboro Village Exxon are still buzzing from the remarkable scene they witnessed this afternoon.

Surveillance cameras show a tall, bald man donned in a neon yellow outfit walk slowly in, in no particular rush. He digs deep into a pocket to pull out various lottery tickets. He checks to see if he won anything.

Seconds later, he starts pumping his arms. He gives the ticket, which he says he purchased in Arizona, to clerk Nagassi Ghebre, who says the winning numbers were on the Powerball ticket.

The apparent winner of one of the biggest jackpots of all time quickly turns to a customer for further verification.

If this one of the two national winners, this mystery man gets, after splitting the cash option with a winner from Missouri, nearly $200 million.

One customer said he heard the possible winner may be in the military.

According to witnesses the man did not buy the ticket in Maryland. He merely showed people what looked like a winning ticket.

According to an Arizona Lottery official, the ticket was purchased in a store near Scottsdale. The man would have to return to Arizona to turn in his winning ticket within 180 days.

WOW!!!! maybe he was visiting for there for the Holiday last week and bought his ticket on Sunday like I did. I know when my sister in-law came she bought tickets from Maryland and checked them here as well. So anything is possible.

This is what I seen on the News this morning. He must have been traveling through ARIZONA and purchase the ticket.

I think you have to have lived there for 6 months to be considered a resident.

This guy is lucky he is built like an NFL linebacker because handing that ticket to the clerk and the other people has got to be one of the stupidest and most dangerous things I have ever seen done. Just announcing it was dangerous enough.

What I love about this video is that we get to see the "real time" reaction of someone who just discovered that he won the one of the biggest lotteries in history. Priceless!

I have always wondered how I would react if I won.

I have a premeditated idea of what I'd do but what would I really do?

The person that made the comment Im sure he or she knows exactly what they were saying/implying..had that been a bald headed white male..there wouldnt have been any reference to the mcdonald situation.where is the correlation?no where in the video does it say a man walks in with a pool of construction workers to check their tickets.oh the correlation made by the poster was because the man is black just like the mcdonalds worker that lied(who was in a pool unlike this guy)...im done

McDonald's is a multi-national employer of folks of all ages, colors and backgrounds.

Many are students, some retired, others work just part-time.

Management positions pay some of the most attractive compensation packages in the industry.

To infer that RedStang was being racist by his comment, is a little ridiculous.

Rational people familiar with the story would recognize that it was a joke based on the MCDonald's employee who falsely claimed to have won a share of a record jackpot,  and had nothing to do with the race (or other characteristics) of either person.

That you assumed it was based on race suggests to me that it's for one of three reasons:
- You're the one who's racist
- You're black (or some other minority) and a bit too paranoid about racism
- You're just an all-around idiot

Either way, it's your issue, not his.

Oh, staaaaahhhp.  It's nowhere near as nefarious as you'd like to believe it is.  Here's RedStang's original comment:

"He's not wearing a mcdonalds uniform so im pretty convinced he won something."

It was merely a backhanded swipe at crazy-pants Mirlande Wilson.  In case you haven't noticed, making fun of her has become a bit of a favorite pastime among LP members.  Just because he didn't mention her by name doesn't make the reference any less obvious.

I think you give consent to certain things when you buy the tickets. Images being one of them.....

You give consent by filling out the claim form and claiming the prize from the lottery. In most states that consent allows the lottery to use your name and likeness for publicity.  There's a slim chance it might even allow the store that sold you the ticket to do so. It definitely doesn't require your consent to let a store in another state do so just because you came in and checked the numbers.

That said,  the guy was in a public place and had no reasonable expectation of privacy, and anyone who took his picture or shot video is free to display it for non-commercial uses, including editorial use, which is what was done in this case.

It was still a lousy thing for the store to do. The store selling awinning ticket may be required to submit any security footage to the lottery, but releasing it to the public is strictly their own choice. If I were to win, one of the first things on my to do list would be call the store and tell the manager that there was a fat tip waiting if nobody ran their mouth about who they thought might have won.

It's technologically possible, but since it's not practical I doubt you'd ever see them make it a reality. Instead of just searching a state's own database it would require access to every state's database. That's a lot of extra overhead for the extremely small percentage of out of state tickets that people would want to scan. Then when the scan said it was a winner, you'd still juts have piece of paper that was worthless until you got it back tp the state that issued it.

I believe the gentleman that was caught on surveillance at the gas station in Maryland is most likely the true winner. He showed up at the station on Thursday in the middle of the day which makes it unrealistic that he purchased an Arizona PB ticket that morning before heading to the airport to catch a flight to Maryland. The timeline just doesn't fit for someone trying to pull of a joke. I seriously doubt he flew in cross country on Thursday only to immediately go to work.

He most likely is meeting with different attorneys and financial advisors prior to claiming his share. From what I read, a lottery winner in Arizona has the option of remaining anonymous .

So are we to understand that he/she turned in the valid signed ticket, completed the paperwork, but will collect the check at a later date when he/she is better prepared?

This recent behavior seems inconsistent with the guy on camera who was practically begging people to participate in his Show and Tell.

Of course sound advice of experts could have settled him down. Hmmmm....

sounds like your casino luck would be a 2nd reason,

a 3rd reason is, its always nice to get out of the city and drive the desert, how far is it ?

No..... I didn't take the drive as work got in the way.

Ft McDowell casino is practically inside the Fountain Hills city limits.

Indian casinos number about 6-8 around the metro Phoenix area, and new ones keep opening.

You have the option of reading the story and coming to your own conclusion or waiting for Arizona to release more information as soon as they have verified every thing.

What a shame and an awful lot of planning if it indeed was a joke.  He sure had me fooled as I couldn't fathom someone going to that extent. Doctoring a local ticket is one thing but to get one several thousand miles away within a matter of hours takes the cake.

The guy never gave out his name so his fame will be short lived. I am just perplexed as to why the state worker and his colleagues would go through all this? What?

Don't assume the state worker and his colleagues tried to trick anyone into thinking he won.

The media, not him or his coworkers released store footage thinking he might have won the other

half of the jackpot. As you stated he never gave out his name or searched for any kind of publicity

unlike that McD's worker.

So we'll have to wait and see who the winner is once he comes forward.

Actually, I thought the man in the yellow work outfit was sincere and legitimate. Someone else stated that it was a hoax.

You are correct that the media glorified this scenario and not the HWY worker which is why it just didn't make any sense to me.

I Agree! Ms. Wilson was a clown seeking her 15 minutes of fame. The HWY worker was the total opposite as he never alerted the media or demand a press conference with an attorney.

He reacted in the same manner most normal folks would and not in the calm and collected manner which many here claim (splitting a 588Million jackpot will unleash any self control one may have).

Just heard on the news that the construction/HWY worker seen on the surveillance tape is a Maryland resident who earlier this year was charged with fraud. What is it with Maryland and these folks who somehow feel entitled to a jackpot they they obviously didn't winNo No

Hi All,

I read you comments on a daily basis and find them very amusing.  I faithfully go to this website everyday:)  Just wanted to add that the winner is in his 30s and married.  Clearly, not the MD gentleman.  I think it was the media's fault for hyping this up and possibly putting this man life in danger.  he very well could have one $1M and that's enough to excite anyone.

So, do you think the new winner was already wealthy because homes in Scottsdale and Paradise Valley are in the millions?

maybe they were already rich but it doesn't mean anything because poor and middle class people win the jackpot too.
