Woman found guilty of murder in lottery winner's death

A Florida woman was convicted Monday of first-degree murder in the slaying of a lottery winner in central Florida.

Dorice "Dee Dee" Moore showed no emotion as the verdict was read. Judge Emmett Battles sentenced her to mandatory life without parole for the murder and an additional minimum mandatory sentence of 25 years for using a gun in the commission of a felony.

Battles called Moore "the most manipulative person" he had ever seen, describing her as "cold, calculating and cruel."

Earlier, he had instructed the jury that it could convict her of a lesser charge. Jurors deliberated for more than three hours before finding Moore guilty of murdering Abraham Shakespeare, who won millions in 2006. Shakespeare's mother was in the courtroom, but showed no emotion.

"She got every bit of his money," said Assistant State Attorney Jay Pruner in closing arguments. "He found out about it and threatened to kill her. She killed him first."

Prosecutors built much of their case from confidential informant's statements and financial records.

"There were a lot of people who owed Mr. Shakespeare a lot of money. One guy owed him a million dollars," argued Defense Attorney Hileman. "The police focused on Dee Dee Moore and they didn't even consider other people."

Moore was briefly banned from the Tampa courtroom Monday over concerns that she may have threatened jurors. She was back a short time later for closing arguments, but said she did not want to take the stand in order to protect her family.

At times, the defendant closed her eyes and averted her face from the jury as prosecutors played audio recordings made by an undercover officer posing as a criminal who would take the fall for Shakespeare's murder.

Prosecutors said the 40-year-old Moore befriended Shakespeare in late 2008, claiming she was writing a book about how people were taking advantage of him. They claim Moore later became his financial adviser, eventually controlling every asset he had left, including an expensive home, the debt owed to him and a $1.5 million annuity. She ultimately swindled Shakespeare out of his dwindling fortune, then shot him and buried his body under a concrete slab in her backyard, Pruner said.

In opening statements, Moore's attorney told the jury that his client was trying to help protect Shakespeare's assets from a pending child-support case when he was killed by drug dealers who haven't been caught.

Former inmate Rose Condora, who was locked up with Moore, said she visits her friend every night at the jail.

"She's not what people think she is. She did not kill that man," Condora told reporters during a break in the trial.

With all the publicity of this trial, she will most likely be in a protective custody cell all by herself, under 23 hour lock-down.

One day after many years of rotting in her little concrete hole, she will be praying that she could have joined the lottery winner in his concrete slab.

Just because the man was black, doesnt mean he was involved in drugs as this woman has claimed.

There is little doubt that she is the cold blooded killer that has done this. From reading the story she was very minipulative from the beggining, and also trying the same thing in court at her trial.

She deserves everything that has been given to her, and it's really a shame that the taxpayers will have to support her for the rest of her life.

Life in jail is too good for her. Im not saying there isnt good financial planners out there, but i doubt he would have kept ahold of most of his money no matter where he invested it. He obviously should have had an annuity. and some " real" financial councelling. I recall hearing the difference between a sociopath and a psychopath is the 2nd one has decided they can get away with murder.

Im sure she will do well in jail, as long as sociopaths have people to manipulate, they're happy.

Well, dallascowboyfan, Abraham had more education than that; yet, I believe it was found that he had only TESTED at that level once an adult.  [I'm not sure if Abraham was tested during one of the times that he was in prison after drug selling charges or when.]

Apparently, Abraham learned a few things from fellow prison mates (e.g., ducking child support, etc.).  Plus, one of Abraham's biggest problems was that after being released from prison, he associated with the same cohorts and relatives whom he associated with when he practiced crime, etc.  Apparently, Abraham spent a lot of his jackpot monies during the 1st year of his win.  Eventually, Dede paid the neighborhood police officer to give her Abraham's address [and introduce her to Abraham as researcher/writer? not sure] about two years after Abraham's medium lottery win and the rest of Abraham's downward slide continued.

I REALLY hope that this is tragedy illustrates to FL legislators the importance of someone's anonymity when it comes to claiming lottery winnings.  I really don't think that there's any compelling reason to force someone to go public if they don't want to.  Just like the latest PB winner in AZ who obviously really wanted to stay anonymous but his identity just HAD to be released to the public by the lottery commission.  WTF?!?  What good is that going to serve other than to satisfy the public's curiosity and to open this guy up to all kinds of headaches and whack jobs and allow for the "search-for-dirt-at-all-cost" crazy media to turn this guy's life upside down??  I really think that sucks.

The guy in FL ALLOWED those people into his life and was loaning out as much as a million at a time to people. He brought on ALL those problems by virtue of his actions...............

If people don't want to go public with a big win they should NOT buy lottery tickets.

I agree completely Ronnie, but I still think that people shouldn't be forced to disclose their identity, that's all.  The guy in FL would have lost all his money one way or the other, no doubt.  He was just not very sophisticated and surrounded himself with questionable people.  I just dont think that if I win a major jackpot I should HAVE to relocate to another state or country for my safety/sanity which I would guess is pretty much what this guy in AZ is going to have to do.  I just think it sucks.

Where are you getting this information from?  Abraham's arrest record only has non payment of child support which was rectified when he hit the lottery.  Where are you getting this stuff about drugs?  drug seller? Even if he did sell drugs, so what? I don't see where that has anything to do with what happened to him.  He was mildly mentally retarded or SLD.  Either one of these causes the person not to be able to make rational decisions specially if they have to be made quickly.  He probably thought about what she was doing to him for a very long period of time before he was able to "mentally' ingest the fact that she was ripping him off. And he probably talked to someone else who convinced him that she was ripping him off.

She took advantage of one of the weakest groups of human beings.  Most of these adults that I know who are severly mentally challenged on some level are very kind and loving.  The sad thing is that they think everyone else is to be trusted because they are thinking that mostly all people are good and have good intentions.

Had it been you instead of Matthew Good who won the PB, making appearances from your balcony may be short lived. You would have hundreds of people camping around your property and just leaving your house would most likely be a health hazard. I also doubt you would be able to drive away unless you hired the police to direct traffic for you.

Your quote will come back to haunt you if you won over a hundred million and decided to stay put in your apartment. You will be harassed everywhere you go and after a while it will take it's toll on you. At that point, you will most likely relocate to a neighborhood that caters to professional athletes, celebrities and fortune 500 executives.

Surrounding yourself among other wealthy neighbors may not sound inviting but it will bring sanity back in your life.

Are you suggesting buying a lottery ticket should be harder than buying a gun?  Or that certain people suspected of buying lottery tickets should go to jail.  Silly sh*t like that happened in the Carolinas before they had lotteries of their own, people returning from neighboring states were stopped and checked for lottery tickets.

When TN had a Democrat Governor, he used to send unmarked state troopers to all the cigarette stores just over the line in neighboring states to watch Tennesseans to see if they were buying more than 2 cartons of cigarettes. Then, if they were, they would radio ahead and have them stopped and ticketed and any cigarettes above 2 cartons would be confiscated when they crossed back into TN.

Ah, the good ol' days... Law n' awda, yessuh.

Judging just by the cut of her jib and the look in her eye, I'd venture to say she'll find her prison social calendar more than adequate.

If you know what I mean...

Fortunately, nothing anyone says at LP ever comes back to haunt them, that's one of the reasons they post here.  Some of the stuff people say and post here they would never repeat to anyone who knew their real names.  Many posters admits not knowing anyone outside of LP that they can share the kinds of thoughts they post here.

I Agree!  Hurray!

This woman is categorical evil, right up there with the super villians of the world, Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, Pol Pot etc.

The significant difference being in the numbers killed, but the intention of wilful deprivation of another is present and consistent.

when people are asked for the money he gave to them;  back, for his family. They state, " its my money, i duped him out of it fair and square. "

People who are greedy of money are those people who are not contented with their life.. I feel so pity on this woman, here greed will put her in jail and will suffer the consequence of her action.

Simba774

Did anyone see her on "Lockup"? I guess she's not getting her Disney wedding after all. The episode is on Youtube, but I cannot remember what season and episode. No one else killed Mr. Shakespeare.  All of the evidence points to her.  She deserves to live the rest her life in prison.

There was not enough evidence to get a 1st degree murder conviction in that case. The state messed up.
