Idaho $1M Powerball ticket to expire Friday

Powerball

TREASURE VALLEY, Id. — Time is quickly running out for the holder of an unclaimed $1 million Powerball ticket that was sold last summer.

The ticket will expire Friday at 3 p.m. if the holder does not arrive in Boise at Idaho Lottery Headquarters to claim their prize.

The winning ticket was sold for the June 20 Powerball draw from an Idaho Lottery retail location in Meridian. The ticket matched the first five numbers from that night's draw, but not the Powerball itself. The winning numbers for that night were 11, 17, 29, 56, 57, and the Powerball number was 14.

"Time is of the essence for the holder of the ticket to come forward and claim their $1 million prize," Jeff Anderson, Idaho Lottery Director, said.

Due to state and federal processing requirements, he said, if no one brings the ticket in by Friday, the Lottery will be unable to pay the claim.

If the prize goes unclaimed, the winning amount will ultimately benefit the Idaho Lottery's beneficiaries, the public schools and permanent buildings of Idaho.

Other valuable tickets have gone unclaimed

This $1 million winning ticket has generated little interest or inquiries from players. A similar situation arose just two years ago, when a $1 million Powerball ticket sold at Huskey's in the town of Irwin along the Idaho-Wyoming border went unclaimed. Like the winner from earlier this summer, the Lottery received very few inquiries about that ticket, either.

"We remind our players frequently to check their tickets routinely for winners. Too many times we've seen players think they did not have a winning ticket because they did not match the Powerball number itself or the jackpot was not won," Anderson said.

In addition to the 2010 $1 million unclaimed Powerball ticket, in the past few years, two other "Match 5" Powerball tickets have gone unclaimed, each worth $200,000. One was from Albertsons in Nampa from April 2006 and the other from Malad City in Oneida County in January 2008.

The unlucky winner is suppose to be enjoying one million dollars but instead he will be picking up lots of idaho potatoes poor guy.

Perhaps this Idahoan on further review sees -$1 million dollars as " small potatoes"..

I just can't help but wonder what happen to that ticket! I keep all my tickets in a safe place, until after the drawing. Then I go and check them very carefully. I check them 2 to 3 times, make circles on the numbers I have, just to be sure. Wait until they do find that ticket and think hey let's check it to see if it's a winner, then find out it was. I would be sick to my stomach, and mad at myself too.

jamella724

Oh no....this must be claimed before this date...Hey man! better look at your tickets now, review the numbers....

It could happen.

Nope, not me.  Unfortunately I haven't bought a ticket in Meridian in over a decade.  Actually, I guess that's fortunate because my tickets go into the recycling bin shortly after the drawing, so I wouldn't be able to re-check them anyway so in a way it's sorta good to know I didn't throw out a million dollar ticket.

Thanks for the tip RR, I did check my tater sack, but no ticket there either.  Cool

This is where a lottery debit card would come in handy. Register your name and add money. It would track the ticket buyer and find those lucky winners. Can't believe how many are unclaimed this year.

I used to throw the losing tickets until a few years ago. Not anymore. I put them in a manilla envelope until tax time in the hopes of some relief at tax time in some special business circumstances. In addition, there are some lotto tickets such as The Arizona Pick-the way the ticket was designed, one could easily throw away a ticket that is actually a winning ticket. That has almost happened to me several times in that game. So my advice is to hold onto those lost tickets for up to a year or more, for one never knows if a mis-read ticket could be winner, maybe who knows, even a Jackpot winner!!!

I will avoid the lottery insanity. I will play the lottery today.

It is stories like this that give lottery players a bad name.

There is no excuse.

Idaho should have player registration card, so players have the option to register, as players in NSW do. If you win a substantial prize, the lottery calls to let you know the good news, if you have not checked your ticket. If you lose you ticket, it enables you to prove the ticket was yours. If you win small prizes and forget to claim the prize, a check will be mailed to you if you have not collected the prize within a few weeks.

Being on as few government lists as possible is considered a good thing in this country.
