Washington Lottery published wrong numbers after raffle draw

Washington Lottery

Blames 'computer glitch'

SEATTLE, Wa. — A North Seattle man couldn't believe his eyes. His ticket in the lottery's Veteran's Raffle was a winner.

He checked the numbers, and then checked them again.  "I was so excited! I couldn't believe I had won the lottery!" he said.

The problem is, he didn't. What he thought was a $1,000 winner was a dud.

"I got up early and went to the lottery office, and they told me my ticket was invalid," he said.

Lottery officials say a computer glitch posted the wrong numbers online Wednesday night. The numbers posted were not the numbers actually drawn.

"Unfortunately, those are not winning tickets and, by state law, we cannot honor any of them," said lottery spokesman Arlen Harris.

Marketed as "the easiest way to win $1 million," tickets for the raffle were $10 each and the proceeds benefit veterans causes in the state.

Lottery officials believe there are 131 bad tickets out there. They concede there may also be people out there who thought they lost after checking numbers last night and are actually winners. One of them could have thrown away $1 million. The million dollar winner has not yet come forward.

"We are terribly sorry about this," said Harris. "We are bringing in a third party to audit our system to make sure this never happens again and that people retain their faith in the state lottery."

Lottery Post has the full set of correct numbers posted online at its Washington Lottery Results page.

Im all seriousness, this stuff is very upsetting.  There is no way a state lottery should publish an entire list of wrong numbers without anyone noticing.

I personally publish dozens of raffle results every year here at Lottery Post.  I am just one person, and it's a lot of work.  But still, every time I publish the results the first thing I do is to open the Web page myself and verify that everything is correct.  If I find an error, I correct it immediately.

So you're telling me that a state lottery with employees dedicated to this stuff cannot spend a few extra minutes to get everything perfect?

I am sure the employee who published the wrong numbers is absolutely mortified by their mistake.  But it should never happen in the first place.  If I can do it, and still run the rest of this entire site/business, then certainly lottery employees who don't have quite so many responsibilities can do it.

You don't need to hire a professional auditor to do this, as was suggested by the lottery spokesman.  You simply need to ensure that people LOOK AT WHAT THEY PUBLISH AFTER THEY FINISH PUBLISHING IT.

Computer glitch, they blamed it on the computer anyway!!

No one here likes RNG for lottos, maybe they should go back to the good old

fashion raffels where they hand pick the numbers and someone writes them down

or someone hand pick names, ya can't mess up names right? lol and two people double check,

I don't know...

To see those numbers on the screen, wake up early to go to the lotto office only to find out you

did not win, what an awful feeling!! The numbers should stay as they are, unless the computer

picked numbers not on the list at all.

We've gotten used to a lot of things that used to piss us off.

We've been kinda conditioned to expect gross negligence and incompetence at the fast food drive-up window.

And mailmen not being able to distinguish between one address and another when they deliver the mail.

And libs having vehicles backed up for a mile behind them as they drive slow in the passing lane.

But this... publishing the wrong numbers and saying you're going to call in an auditing firm to make sure you don't screw things up again...

Now that would really piss me off if I had a ticket with winning numbers they published in error due to their utter incompetence.

When the NYL rolled out their new website several years ago, they also didn't snag all the bugs.

For almost five days they were posting the wrong results!!!

I am one of those people who watch the draws everyday, and when I went to the computer I was all confused for about a week and all my charts were in disarray.

I remember thinking oh boy.   Somebody is gonna throw away a 5 thousand dollar winner!

Very distressing indeed.Disapprove

Those people who were shafted should get a free steak dinner at sizzler or something.Yes Nod

Because the chance the million dollar winner is gonna come forward is very slim, because many people dont hoard their lottery tickets the way I do.

I keep all of my losing tickets so I can write off the losses against any wins. So I would still have that raffle ticket but I know most people probably tear trash / throw away any ticket they find to be losers...even those that those ticket scanners indicate are either invalid or losers (I always check tickets using at least 2 sources and knew the scanner was wrong).

Raffles stink!

I'm cosigning on your comment LottoBoner - I agree, that people who think they are winners based on the lottery's mistake should be compensated in someway. The least the Lottery should do is pay up with something, the most they should do is send out an advertisement right away to make players aware of the mistake. Maybe some folk can salvage those tickets in a hurry and go and claim those funds.

You best believe if the rolls were reversed and a lottlery winner owed the state 1 penny, they'd be coming after them with a vengance  - charging interest, and penalties and fees.  A person can tell them a thousand times over, that... hey it was an honest mistake. I inadvertantly keyed in a 6 when it should have been a 9. Yea, I owe you 3 dollars in tax money, but the state will never allow leniency.

We need to watch who we choose to make the rules.  Let's go on a Lottery Strike Washington State. Let them know they need to pay up.

You think the administrative lottery folk are cheating? I know I'm ranting, but I hate when the state lottery cheats. Rant

Every now and then I consider that a winning lottery ticket might be an error in some way. I dont keep mine in a shoebox but I do hold it in the recycle bin for a little while.

I also remind my self that when I do win, I will check multiple sites to ensure they all show the same result.

However, with a state raffle, you dont really have many options other than the 1 site, which makes this one harder to take.

I am thinking these lottery folks should try to seek out the winners, via store cameras and logs, and try to find them.
It is sad to think so many people may have thrown out actual winning tickets. What a shame.

Heck for all we know this lottery did all of this ON PURPOSE so they wouldnt have to pay out as much.

Original Bey's avatarOriginal Bey

Apparently, this was not marketed well and they fell far short of their goals.

Then this fiasco happens.

Not only are players suffering but the intended recipients/beneficiaries of the raffle (veterans) won't see much of the revenue earned.

The lottery needs to do serious damage control here if they hope to do this again in the future and be successful.

So, was this raffle done by Computer Random Number Generator??????????

Something in Washington is beginning to stink.

And, where in the heck were the Auditors who are suppose to verify the whole process from start to finish.

Being Sorry isn't good enough.   Blaming a "Computer Glitch" is not an answer.   Was the Glitch when the Computer RNG generated the winning?? numbers or was it when the Computer RNG generated the winning??? list of numbers.

In any case, I feel the state should honor all the "Winning numbers" that they printed & posted.  They can take it out of the lottery profits & write it off as a loss to Bad Management.

I agree totally. Unfortunately its just the "state of the state" (both fed and state) in which we find ourselves living. After all, why have need of accountability or even credibility among the workers when the lack thereof serves as a catalyst for creating more work, and need of more workers (thereby helping everyone's state)?

DO YOU PEOPLE BELIVE ME NOW!!!!!! I have told everyone before on this site that the Washington State is the most corrupt lottery that has ever existed.

You people have NO IDEA How corrupt! The claims I make are true and are not fabricated.

My friend used to work at the Washington Lottery and she quit when they were running the balls because she said she watched them run the machine over 20 times until they got the 6 numbers that "they wanted" And over-heard the officaial say "Yeah lets go with those numbers" It made her so sick she almost vomited.

There is absolute proof that a dead man years ago won the Washington State lottery 3 years after he was already dead. I have the picture and I have his obituary from the news paper and the date he died and who he was survived by, it is the same man, not a JR. Nor a SR. The same man. He supposedly won the Washington State lottery "3 years After he was dead" Explain that!

They were the only State in the 1990's who ever had the same 6 numbers show in any lottery. Once in 1991 and again the same 6 numbers in 1996.

Christine Gregior landed a position as governor and appointed the lottery officials who run the state lottery. She ran the state like a mobster. She used tough tactics to force the real winning goverrnor to forfiet his position after he won the election when her cronies faked a missing ballet box after Dino Rossi actually won the election. A judge, I mean "her personal friend" upheld the decision and Dino Rossi stepped down. He decided after a long fight not to appeal. He was muscled out of office after the good people of Washington Elected him. And left his new found elected position.

There is actual proof that the Washington State lottery actually used numbers from another state lottery and then incorporate some of these random numbers into their own lottery to make it look to auditors that their lottery is also random since the other lottery still used balls. ( I have actual proof of this and could prove it in any court of law and to the public) I have created a powerpoint presentation to prove this fact to a jury when the time comes when the crooks who run the lottery in Washington will be proven as the corrupt criminal liars they truly are.

Another lottery who is tied with the Washington State lottery is also corrupt and once they posted winning numbers on their website and different numbers on their automated phone system. I recorded the numbers on a tape recorder and then took a snap shot of the website with the 2 different numbers. Same night. 2 different numbers. I then called this lottery and told them about it. They claimed they had no idea at all and immeditely changed the numbers less than 5 minutes after the call. In otherwords they had to have someone "me" inform them of this or they may never have changed them. Of course after many people threw away their winning tickets.

I have absolute proof from a Washington State lottery representitive official type that the lottery is rigged and its all a marketing ploy to scam millions out of hard working people in Washington and surrounding States.

There is nothing at all about the Washington State lottery that is honest or good. Many people in Washington State have vowed to never play again because they also have behind the scene proof it is corrupt.

In the past they ran the same 6 numbers that had already shown in other states. One of these 6 winning numbers recently being from 2010 from Wisconsin. The same exact 6 numbers.

They have forced the entire state to believe whatever winning numbers they say are the winning numbers are the winning numbers. People in Washington have no way to prove otherwise and must believe these people who run the lottery " these people who just did this Raffle mind you are the people Washington must believe whatever they say" there is no recording of any drawings anymore that they show on tv, no video tape to watch or any other way to view any drawing. They claim this is for budgit cuts but they are lying. They spent more money on frivilace things immediately after the budgit cuts like such as $30,000 on a new website when the old was great! And other more well trained and able website developers had their bid in for less, yet they went with the higher bid. Doesnt sound like their trying to save money at all.

Now onto the story of the day. "The Fake Raffle"

They claim that this Raffle goof was a computer glitch yet I promise you they are LYING!

The Washington State lottery will be BUSTED! An organization has been working behind the sceens to expose the Washington State lottery officials since 2004 and has obtained legal video tape, audio, and survalience footage of most of the corrupt officials who run the State Lottery. I promise you they are about to go out of business and all of their empolyees will be fired every last one of them. And the New Governor of Washington is going to make sure of it. MARK MY WORDS! They wnt to sweep this under the rug but it wont be swept away.

DO NOT BELIEVE ANYTHING THIS LOTTERY CLAIMS AS TRUTH. This was not a computer glitch. When the time is right you will all come to see the real shocking evidence that the Washington State lottery is the most corrupt lottery in the entire WORLD.

People will be sent to prison, including Judges, Police officers, Auditors, Officials and Employees of the State Lottery and some past winners as well. You will see it in the headline news! It will be in the headline news. You will see it in the headlines. And because of this media attention it will revelutionize the way the lottery is played and revealed in other states as well. Its only a matter of time now people. Dont give up hope. I promise you that the lottery in the future will be very close to how some of you truly want it to be like. The numbers will not be drawn behind closed doors one day.

I do believe that everyone from Washington and surrounding states should ban this lottery stand together and not play their lottery anymore. The most you will ever win in the Washington State Lotto for instance is $1000 thats it. You wont win the jackpot! Unless they let you. You dont win because of the numbers you play you only win if they let someone win. Its not a real game. They only want you to believe you will win the jackpot. Is it really worth all your effort for a grand?. You are not going to win more than $1000 in Lotto anyway so why play. Think about it! Think about it real hard.

Think about what just happened in this Raffle, your gut tells you it wasnt a computer glitch!. And your soul tells you too. Listen to your heart. Think about how often you play and how many times you walk away with nothing or very little. They have the smallest payouts of all lotteries in the world. There is a reason for this.

Its a fixed lottery. I know that you may not want to hear this but stop being a sucker. BAN TOGETHER WASHINGTON AND LET THEM LIVE WITHOUT YOUR MONEY! Lets stand together. Think about what they did with this Raffle! Think real hard about it. Does this seem honest to you? Well DOES IT?

DONT LET THEM GET AWAY WITH THIS any longer.

They are corrupt.

jamella724

Somebody should be blamed for this mistake.  It was a horrible experience for this man to see the winning numbers on the computer.  The "poster" of the number should be blamed and should face a charge...What an unlucky day for the man...

Incompetent does NOT equal corrupt.

Somebody should be blamed for this mistake.  It was a horrible experience for this man to see the winning numbers on the computer.  The "poster" of the number should be blamed and should face a charge...What an unlucky day for the man...

When I read your post I thought you said "the poster of the numbers should br TRAINED" lol.lol. Which is likely exactly what will happen. lol. lol. The state hires a full time "team" of people to train each other a lot.

Wow. This makes me think twice about quitting my job after checking my tickets online. I guess instead of calling in and saying I won't be coming in anymore after I win the Hoosier Lotto jackpot on Wednesday, I'll just call in and say I have a financial emergency to take care of and won't be in that day. lol
