RALEIGH, N.C. — A key North Carolina House leader says a bill he's drawing up about the North Carolina state lottery won't include a provision prohibiting ticket sales to people receiving public assistance or who are in bankruptcy.

Speaker Pro Tempore Paul Stam of Apex said Wednesday the provision was the least important part of his proposal. He said got questions from all sides on the lottery issue about the provision. Some critics questioned singling out the poor or how retailers would enforce the law.

Stam said the bill will still seek to remove the word "education" from the North Carolina Education Lottery because proceeds account for a small percentage of state education funding. He also wants the lottery to reveal more fully the long odds of a winning a big prize.

Thank goodness. The last thing we need is clerks acting as social police.

Lol, I think most people get that 1:175,000,000+ odds of winning a JP are way LONG.

You would have better odds of getting mauled by a polar bear and a regular bear both in the same day.

Your right, the long odds are understood and accepted. I do like the idea of "better odds" though.Yes Nod

Yes, people should be informed fully prior to getting involved with lottery. I say it should not even be called lottery, but a social fund, which also allows people to win prices.

noise-gate

Someone probably told the speaker to visit lottery post to view the responses since the site is visited by more people than the entire population of his State.
If he was up for reelection. ..his campaign would be dead on arrival.
