Va. store owner sells $3 million lottery ticket to herself

Mega Millions

When Glinda Salgado heard that the winner of a $1 million Mega Millions lottery ticket purchased it at her family store in Herndon, she was excited.

She never imagined it was her own ticket.

The drawing, held on March 14, revealed that a winning ticket was sold at her store, Elden Market & Deli — but nearly two weeks went by with no winner coming forward.

Then, Salgado realized she hadn't checked her own ticket — and discovered the winner was actually herself.

"I didn't think it was me, so I didn't check my ticket," she said.

Salgado's ticket matched the first five numbers in the March 14 Mega Millions drawing — but, since she spent an extra $1 for the Megaplier, she actually won a total of $3 million.

The winning numbers were 7, 20, 40, 54, and 69, with Mega Ball number 12. The only number she didn't match was the Mega Ball number.

Lottery officials presented Salgado, who is from Chantilly, with the check for her winnings on Monday at the store.  She said she picked four of her numbers based on numbers that are important to her, and two others at random.  Had she matched that final number, she would have won a Mega Millions jackpot estimated at $353 million.

The odds of matching the first five numbers in Mega Millions are 1 in 18,492,204.

Salgado says she doesn’t have any immediate plans for her winnings.

Some people might say the store, located at 1411 Elden St., is in a lucky area — it's just a block or two away from the Giant store where a $107 million Mega Millions jackpot was won in 2011.

Mega Millions drawings are held Tuesdays and Fridays at 11 p.m.
