Virginia woman wins Cash 5 for second time

Virginia Lottery

STAUNTON, Va. — Most people wonder what it would be like to win the lottery.

When Peggy Huffman of Staunton won the $100,000 top prize in the July 4 Cash 5 drawing from the Virginia Lottery, she didn't have to wonder what it would feel like. She'd already won before.

In September 2006, Huffman won $100,000 in Cash 5 for the first time.

Nearly eight years later, she matched all five numbers with a ticket she bought at the BP gas station located at 190 Jefferson Highway in Staunton. Those winning numbers were 14, 17, 25, 30, and 32.

Huffman likes those numbers and played them again when she won last week. She found out she'd selected winners again when she checked the newspaper the next day.

"I couldn't believe it," she told lottery officials, according to a press release. "I was stunned!"

Huffman, who is retired, said she intends to pay bills with her winnings.

Cash 5 drawings are held daily at 1:59 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. The chances of winning the $100,000 top prize are 1 in 278,256.

$100,000 on odds of 1 in 278,256?

Hey Texas Lottery Commission. Are you paying attention?

Our Cash five jackpots are rarely $20,000, usually $17,000 with odds of 1 in 435,897. That plain sucks.

She did something most players dare not....played the same combination that had hit before. Now she's hit twice on the same set!

$100,000 for odds of 1 in 278,256 is pretty good. They even offer a 25 cent bet.

It's fun when these kinds of events occur.  I wonder how long it will take for the cognitive dissonance to dissipate from the minds of those who believe past draws have an effect on future ones?

Couldn't agree more about Texas!  Texas Lottery needs new leadership desperately.

If you pay attention to draw sales, there has been a steady decline through the years, especially the Cash 5 game.

If you keep making it harder and harder to win, eventually people will give it up or spend their gambling dollars elsewhere.

Does Gtech still have anything to do with your lottery?  Regardless, you really should check out a lottery website there in TX that's on top of all that's going on.

I look at her site once in a while. In fact I looked at it earlier today. My problem with her is that she's a chronic beecher.

Yeah, there are some things that bug me about TLC, but for the most part, I think it's one of the most transparent lotteries in the country.

Arizona's pick 5 has odds of 1 in 749,398 for a $50,000 payout. Maybe I should move back to Virginia.

With such a great pick 5, I am happy that people win twice!

As far as I know, Virginia has the best odds at pick5 game in the nation!!!

Massachusetts pick 5 (Mass Cash) has odds of 1 in 324,632 to win 100K. Have gotten 4 out of 5 several times (1 in 2,164)

Congrats to this lucky lady!

That's nothing, our Rolling Cash5 jackpot will be over $300K tomorrow and its odds are 1:575K.  I thought Texas did things big.

Our Bonus Match 5 here in Maryland has a $50.000 payout with odds of 1 in 575.757. If I was on the Maryland Virginia line, I would play it's Cash 5 instead. You're right rcbubckeye, the Texas Lottery Commission is definitely being stingy on the jackpot of it's Cash 5 game, and there is no reason for it.

Tomorrow it will be almost $500K, I think I might pick up a couple of RC5 tickets  instead of MM tickets.

I didn't get around to buying any tickets yesterday but I see it continued to roll to $585K for today so I probably make a better effort today.  The odds of winning the top prize are 1:575757.

Too late for today, but for the future, why not use those numbers you've talked about that won you a nice prize in the past? Smile

Too late for today, but for the future, why not use those numbers you've talked about that won you a nice prize in the past? Smile

Several reasons.

Although Rolling Cash5 has very good odds and I've tracked it or years, I've seldom played it because its jackpot seldom gets over $200K since it's won every three or four days .  Besides, it takes a lot of time to do a workout that involves almost 3500 past drawings.

The nice prizes I won in the past were won playing our Classic Lotto and Super Lotto games which were/are 6/49 games and RC5 is a 5/39 game and those winning combinations never came up before or again in any game I play.  Even a game like RC5 with only 575,757 possible combinations has only had five combinations repeat in its twelve years history.

To beat the odds of any lottery game you have to get lucky and I believe I get lucky when I take the time to pick my numbers based on observations I've  made of past drawings.

I'm just telling it as I sees it (popeye the sailor)

I've played a few QPs when I just wanted to be in the game but my best wins have been the result of me picking the numbers I played.

Since our RC5 has rolled up to almost $800K for tonight's drawing, I'll be picking some numbers to play tonight too.

Wow that is INSANE!!!! Winning twice but then winning with the same numbers... I am speechless!
