16 siblings share $20 million lottery jackpot in New Jersey

New Jersey Lottery

Sixteen brothers and sisters from New Jersey who pooled money for a decade to buy lottery tickets got the ultimate payout — a $20 million Pick 6 jackpot they'll use to repair homes they lost in Sandy, send their children to college and preserve the legacy of their late mother, who urged them to vie for the pot together in the first place.

The Endreson clan, who range in age from 53 to 76, accepted the check from the New Jersey Lottery Thursday. They' opted for a lump sum payment of $14 million — about $10 million after taxes — and share it amongst themselves and with three children of a brother who died a few years ago.

One of the sisters said the family began pooling small bills together 10 years ago because their mother wanted to invest in a future of family bungalows at the shore. When she died, there was money left in a pot and they invested that in the lottery. As the brothers and sisters considered how to preserve their mother's legacy, they decided to continue the tradition of the lottery pool.

Eventually, they won. The family describes themselves as hard-working people who "go to work every day like everyone else."

"You just can't even imagine the feeling," said sister Faith Schiabor, recalling when her sister phoned her to tell her they had won the top prize. "I just went into instant shock. I was really happy for her at first — i didn't think that it was our ticket. I thought she won. Then when she said it was the family lottery, I said, 'Oh my god.'"

Asked what their mother would say about the big lotto win, Schiabor's sister who purchased the winning ticket said, "She'd just be so laid back."

The lottery says the family's patriarch emigrated from Norway in the early 20th century and married a woman from the Jersey shore. They set roots in Ocean County.

This is a great story. Great perseverance.

And you are simply a troll. By your standards you don't deserve to win anything. Why don't you just go away?

That's not the lottery fault, they're obligated to award the prizes to the players with the winning tickets.

Thumbs UpYou are absolutely correct. These days some people seem to have forgotten the true meaning of family. These guys have been pooling their money for years to play the lottery. That is an incredible feat in and of itself, considering that some pools fall apart, after one or two draws, because of internal squabbles.

There has been quite a few jackpots claimed in NJ by lotto pools and we never hear the drama that is usually expected. Congratulations Faith Schiabor and siblings  Thumbs Up

Wow, that's pretty harsh.  It's also ignorant.  Plenty of people win who deserve it and these people seem to fall into that category.

The article said 16 siblings will split the pot, along "with three children of a brother who died a few years ago." It didn't say, but I'm thinking the $10 million after tax prize will be split 17 ways, which comes to $588k ea., not a huge sum by any standards, particularly when this information is considered: "... jackpot they'll use to repair homes they lost in Sandy, send their children to college and preserve the legacy of their late mother...."

So, it's pretty easy to see that they'll use that money as a tool to repair their lives, to lay a foundation for the future of their children and build that legacy to their mother.  I'm also thinking there won't be much left after they do all that, so perhaps they will go through all that money, but with a family so invested in each other as they seem to be, they'll never "go broke".   The money might be gone, but they'll always have each other.

You, OTOH, are just a tool.

Are you an imported Toad? Are you poisonous as well? This family has survived the turn of the 21st century, and struck a decent size collect as well. They deserve it just for sticking together as a family, despite all the hard times inflicted by Sandy, 9-11, economy, tax man, wasteful electioneering, economy... get a grip mate!

What's up with "Deserving" or "Not Deserving"?

Anyone who buys a ticket "deserves to win" just by virtue of putting their dollar in the pool.  Even serial killers and internet trolls "deserve" to win under this criterion.  I wish we could stop putting winners in boxes like this.

I'm very happy for this family.  Sounds like they can use the money and will put it to good use.

It is really nice to read a story about a "pool"  that is going to share, with no lawyers involved.  It is even nicer that it is a family supporting each other without squabbling.

Congrats to this family, sounds like they are always there for each other, money or not.

Now what is it about Ocean county and #16 ? remember the winners that worked the Ocean county garage ?

or is something about Jersey and 7-11 stores ?

I have a 7-11 not to far from me that's considered a lucky spot...maybe I should go there more often.

Thanks for that!

My point was that a family of this size (16), has 'survived' all the trauma that has passed during their lives and they have finally won a considerable prize and are going to share it amongst the whole family.

Almost everyone ends up in a box eventually, even if its just to get bar-b-q'd.
