RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina Education Lottery officials say a Greensboro woman played the lottery for the first time and won big.
Jamiela Hardick told officials she wanted to try her luck Monday with two lottery tickets. She won $5 on one and $100,000 on the other.
She said she bought a $5 Crossword 10K ticket and a $5 Mega Bucks ticket at the Sheetz on West Wendover Avenue in Greensboro. She won her $5 back on the Crossword 10K ticket and the top prize of the Mega Bucks game.
After taxes were withheld, Hardrick, 21, received a check for $69,201. She said she plans to use her prize money to help pay her way to college where she plans to study nursing.
As of Thursday, six more $100,000 top prizes remain to be claimed in the Mega Bucks game.
If I win, it will be my first time to buy a lottery ticket too...
That will be my story and I'm sticking to it.
Lucky lady. First time or not, that is an annual salary of some professionals. Enjoy it.
they sure took out a lot of taxes31,000 , I though that taxes was 7% on a dollar, oh" I forgot they go by the color of your skin.
Stop that. Let's just be happy for this young lady. Ask where you don't understand. Good luck to you.
Congrats to the lucky lady
They took out the 5.8% N.Carolina state tax and the 25% Federal tax. Depending upon her other income and deductions, she may get some of that back or she may have to pay more the next time she files. I'm guessing she'll get a hefty refund, good for her.
No, they took it out based on the color of THEIR skin....red...with horns on their heads...
Really ....complaining about having to pay taxes and top it off with the skin color comment ?
Goodness gracious... There you have it America ...it's official...You can't fix gormless !!
On the brighter side, congrats to Jamiela and her career choice. I truly wish you the very best young lady
Awesome win, of course stuff like that can't happen to me... I'll have to spend 50k to get 100k, just my luck. lol.
Congrats
Congratulation Jamiela and well wisheson your future endeavor you are doing the right thing by paying for education.
Congratulations Ms Hardrick.
Good luck with your future Nursing career, (another life time reward).
I must have done something wrong when I played for the first time, I lost!!
"I'll have to spend 50k to get 100k, just my luck."
If you manage that, consider yourself lucky.
Most spend $200K to win $100K!
I agree! I find it hard to believe when people win, they claim it was their first time playing. In recent years with the lottery jackpots escalating above $400m. Most people will at least spend $1 or do an office pool.
For a NC resident you seem woefully unaware thats Govenor McCrory lowered our tax rate. Has nothing to so with who you are or what you are. We are all equal under the new tax rate.
It's usually the first timers who hit it big and I seriously doubt she's lying because she doesn't even look like she plays all the time.
Anyway Congratulations.
I don't understand the comment about she doesn't even look like she plays all the time. What are you suppose to look like if you pay all the time? Is there a certain look you have when you play all the time?
I didn't realize those who play the lottery have a certain look. Do first time lottery winners who never played before have a certain look as well?
Congratulations Jamiela Hardick Spend Wisely
Well, I can't speak for anybody else, but as for me, it's the look of discouragement. <grin>
Sounds like a lady with a plan.
If she graduates from a nursing school with no student debt, she will be well on her way to a secure future, unless she is foolish with her money.
Best wishes to her!
The federal government takes 25% of the winnings, regardless of your skin color, and the state of North Carolina has no control over that.
Some may spend $200k and not even win $10k.
Congratulation to Jamiela Hardick, on her win. Enjoy nursing school. Very wise move.
