Massachusetts man buys lottery tickets to break $100 bill, wins $10 million

Massachusetts Lottery

A Massachusetts man who bought two lotto tickets so he could break a $100 bill to buy lunch was left stunned after he ended up scooping an astonishing $10 million in prize money.

Richard Noll only purchased two $20 Platinum Millions instant tickets at Lanzilli Groceria in East Boston so he'd have smaller notes to buy food at a sandwich shop, reports ItemLive.com.

But he ended up with much more than he bargained for when he scratched the cards — and discovered he was a newly minted multimillionaire.

Noll claimed his prize alongside his wife Leese at the lottery's Braintree headquarters on Thursday.

He chose to receive the windfall as a one-off $6.5 million payout, which, after taxes, means he'll have $4.55 million in the bank.

Revere-based Noll said he now planned to buy a house and take his granddaughter to Disney World.

Mitesh Patel, who sold him the winning ticket, will also receive a $50,000 bonus.

Lottery bosses said that Noll was the third $10 million prize winner in the Platinum Millions game since it launched in 2013.

Mass Lottery churns out so many millionaires in scratch cards, it's mind boggling. But it's not as easy as it may appear. Mr. Noll you are one lucky man. Mr Patel caught some windfall Thumbs Up

Long Odds

Congratulations to the winner. The common thread in many of these winner stories is the winner only purchased the winning ticket for another purpose, change to buy a sandwich (requires the purchase of two $20 scratch tickets); stuck in traffic, so bought three, $20 tickets; doing laundry and wanted to pass the time, et al. I play lottery games to win and so do all these players.

Patel seem to be a popular name in lottery winners stories.  I heard a Patel took over a local gas station that sells lottery tickets, maybe I'll start buying my tickets there.

Let me make sure I understand this. The only reason he bought lottery tickets was to break a $100 bill, so he bought two tickets that cost $20 each?

I wonder if he goes to the same church as that woman in Florida. "No, pastor, I don't gamble. I just needed to break a $100 bill, and the only thing on sale was $20 lottery tickets."

I wonder if people tell these stories (I don't want to call them liars because they might be telling the truth.) because it makes for a good news story or something?

beacause " if i paid with $100 they would expect a big tip, and i dont like to tip. " is a crappier story

The lottery already broke it for him when they held 25% of it for taxes and they will help even more when they send a W-2G to be filed with his taxes.

Sure, KY Floyd, from the beginning of this article, most of us probably started chuckling when the article tried to sell that someone who has a large bill THINKS that they must spend $20 in order for someone to take the trouble to accept that large bill.

Several times, at different gas stations, I've cashed a $50 or $100 bill before, but it's only to buy a pack of gum or my usual twice weekly on-line drawing lottery tickets.  A couple of times it was only a $1 purchase. Cash is cash ... if the owner(s) is concerned with forgeries, she/he should take 10 minutes to individually train/quiz ALL cashiers on how to hold large bills up to the light, and look at special charactors/images that are difficult to forge.

This winner/long-term gambler was certainly enjoying tossing around the fib!!!

That's not the first time a lottery winner told such a story.  I remember reading about a Michigan man who shared a $300M+ MM jackpot with winner from Chicago who said he brought a couple of hot dogs and a drink with a hundred dollar bill and took his change in lottery tickets of which one was the winner.
