Powerball

An Alabama woman has claimed her prize from the winning Powerball ticket sold in North Escambia, Florida, on April 11.

Alice Dawson, 60, of Frisco City, AL, chose to receive the $80 million annuity jackpot as a one-time, lump-sum payment of $53,440,213.76.

"This is a blessing in our lives and proves that anything is possible with faith in God," said Dawson. "We plan on using our winnings to help our friends, family and our church."

The winning  $80 million Powerball Quick Pick ticket was the only winner in the nationwide drawing, and was sold at the locally-owned State Line Gift Shop on Highway 97, next to the Piggly Wiggly. The winning numbers were  1, 12, 32, 42, and 58, with Powerball number 12.

The State Line Gift Shop will receive a bonus of $40,000 for selling the winning ticket.

Powerball tickets are $2 each. This was Florida's ninth Powerball jackpot winner since the state joined the game in 2009.

WTG, I guess I'll keep going to Delaware for PB and MM, not just anonymous but maybe get some out of state luck.

A quick check on Google maps shows 2 lotto stores a stone's throw from the border, wonder if she also bought

tix at Yes Lotto,  just across the road and slightly closer to the border !

Among other things they are probably going to change the matrix to make it harder to win a jackpot. It was supposed to happen this month but MUSL got cold feet because of the Monopoly disaster. So the target date is now around July.

When Alabama residents witness firsthand how the lottery win transforms this woman's lifestyle will the begin clamouring for the games to come closer to home? The timing of this win is spectacular given that there is a renewed push for the state to implement lottery gaming. Will the church turn down her donations calling it ill-gotten gain? #IDoubtItSeriously

Congratulations, Alice Dawson, on your big gambling win! Party

Before you receive the monies, you will pay the Federal Income Taxes plus the 5% [State] Income Taxes due difference between Florida and Alabama.  I believe each state would receive half of that 5%.  Any comments/conformations from the www.LotteryPost.com member Tax Accountants?

Awesome Win! Congratulations!  Hopefully Alabama could start their own lottery no need to cross state borders :).

Thumbs Up you're right and Thumbs Down to MUSL

You know I'd rather they lower the starting jackpot but keep everything else the way it is currently.  T

But the state of Alabama did not benefit from the revenue raised!

Alabamians are happy  to support other state lotteries, it is time they were given the  opportunity to raise revenue for Alabama, with a state lottery.

Congratulation to Alice Dawson, on her PB. win. Having a lottery in Ala. has became a major issue here lately; It starting to sound like, somebody final wake - up & smell the coffee. Right now, all the lottery money go to 3 other state, TN. GA. & FL.  while their using their lottery to help there school's. Ala. is still in the stone age, using the telephone, bookstore etc.... to get fund or you can buy, books from selected bookstore, were the teachers has send a list of which books they need for each child & how many. I recently did this it has fault in this way of doing thing. I was asked, would I like to donate books to the school at this  bookstore. They show the lists of books to choice from. I had only {2} questions. How many children are usually in their classroom. They said, {30} or a little more. Fine. I told , I want 35, books , for that class all the same book. Each child could have a copy & not have to share. If a teacher wanted to give a assignment out of the book. let say homework, this arrangement sound like a great idea to me. They had a nice list. They don't have 35 copies of any of the books on lists in the store. The lady was so sweet. She was sorry they don't have them and no more could be order at that time. Since you believe that is a blessing you & all the other workers  wanted it to happen.  Why didn't you prepare to receive what you asked for?  I actually when in this bookstore to replace a positive thinking book. Which they don't have & don't want this writer's books in their store his work was all about success, happiness, good health, &  money!

The state where the prize was won - in this case, Florida - has priority for state income tax. However, Florida has no state tax on lottery prizes, so she'll end up paying Alabama's full 5% rate.

Did you guys know that the Puerto Rico lottery doesn't take out federal income tax.

They only have a 20% vat/state tax.

I know your answer is 100% correct but do you know if she could have moved to Florida and then claimed the ticket saving herself the 5% tax?  When do you incur the state tax burden...when you win or when you turn in the ticket?  I know it is extremely easy to establish residency in Florida.

From what I've read is that you have to be a resident for at least one year before you can escape taxes of the former state. North of me is New Hampshire. It's so close that I could easily buy my tickets there and avoid the 5% income tax here should I win. But I was told to not even bother try.

For taxation purposes I wonder how they deal with dual residency of NY & FL when winning ticket was bought in either state. Snowbirds spend almost 5 months in the south

Congrats to Alice Dawson and to  the state of Alabama. They now have a new millionaire tax payer.

Thank you myturn.    My Megabucks Doubler Season Ticket was nowhere to be found.  Not in its normal place, tore up the drawer and there it was.  Now it is tucked in with business cards like it is suppose to be.  It is good to mid-August.

Alabama and Mississippi may never get lotteries.  Just like Kentucky is too stupid to get casinos, we just hop on across the river to play in Indiana.  A little longer drive to Ohio casinos, and they are non-smoking.  My point being restrict activities in one state and folks will travel to another do with their money as they please.
