A woman was overjoyed after winning a $20,000 lottery prize Tuesday afternoon, but her celebratory mood soured a couple hours later after she and her son were arrested on drug charges, according to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.
Migdalia Cruz, 59, and Luis Correa, 39, were arrested on heroin-related charges while Correa's girlfriend, Dana LaFlamme, 34, was arrested on a probation violation.
The Volusia County Sheriff's Office showed up at Cruz's home on Howland Boulevard in Deltona with a search warrant and found Cruz and Correa standing outside, deputies said. Cruz, according to an arrest report, was holding a box that contained three bags of drugs, which tested positive for heroin and fentanyl.
LaFlamme was inside the house when deputies arrived.
During the search of the house, deputies found more heroin, prescription pills, ecstasy, cocaine residue and various drug paraphernalia, said Laura Williams, a Sheriff's Office spokeswoman.
The house is located within 1,000 feet of a school, so Cruz and Correa were charged accordingly, according to the Sheriff's Office.
Cruz told the Sheriff's Office she had just returned from Orlando where she and her son had claimed a $20,000 prize for a winning scratch-off ticket, deputies said.
Correa was held on $36,000 bail while Cruz was released after posting $5,000 bail. LaFlamme, who was charged with an additional count of habitual driving with a suspended license, was held without bail. Deputies said they had staked out the home before moving in and had seen LaFlamme pull into the driveway in a brown Mazda.
1000 ft. from the school..sick.
Glad they got caught.
with you sully16. Good work by the Police.
This post may contain sarcasm .
You mean in this modern day we haven't legalized heroin so ppl can profit and keep the one's in need happy?
I'm shocked. (Not).
These folks just needed to wait a wee bit longer to invest. (End sarcasm).
welcome to the modern era of bleep jejeje
Picture is worth a thousand words. Fine outstanding citizens there, perhaps they divided into some of them drugs themselves.
So whatever was left from taxing $20K will be spent on being stupid. Sounds like they were under surveillance.
Only good I got out of the article is that FL has regional cashing offices, right? Used to think one would have to travel to Tallahassee to claim. Going to look that up now for my own curiosity.
Nine district offices where you can claim up to $250K; anything over must be claimed in Tallahassee, Florida.
Fine, outstanding group. I think the son has gang ties which is so common with many of the Hispanic lawbreakers in Florida as well as many other states.
funny. grl. lmfao
i love ur sarcasm,in this post.
I am glad they won, but geez, arrested shortly after smh drugs are bad people, all NEGATIVE livin' #Getclean while you're still alive
and able to be happy in life, without it.
So glad i never even tried weed.
but i DO SUPPORT weed for medical et.al.,
going to check my numbers for today... Good luck to all playing their lotteries.
It pains me to see how happy others misfortunes make you people. Keep it up and Karma will see to it that you get yours. Spend your days lifting others up that are down. None of us are without sin.
I don't think it's making anybody here happy by their comments...they're just telling it like it is.
It's not like they were caught getting a traffic violation but they did that too...& I don't call it a misfortune when others choose to deal with dangerous drugs & especially near a school to get the innocent hooked on them...saw one of them was fentanyl & from what I read is very dangerous actually all of them are.
The only way they would get lifted up by me would be if they turned their life around...it's up to them to do that...nobody can do it for them!
Karma has nothing to do with this situation!
I agree!
A little common sense applies. Buying and dealing drugs is not misfortune for these idiots.
