Lotto winner hits big jackpot a second time

Colorado Lottery Gee, thanks for saving some for us.

Shelley Hedwall claimed a $1.12 million jackpot from the Colorado Lottery on Tuesday, five years to the day after she hit the Lotto jackpot for $4 million.

"She said that she was a little apprehensive in that she did win once already," said lottery spokesman Todd Greco. "And there might be some people out there who'd say, 'She won once; what makes her think she should play again?' "

But that was her ticket, her dollar and her dream. And sorry, folks, she picked 2, 7, 10, 19, 22 and 41. You didn't.

"There are no rules saying you can't win more than once," Greco said. "If you spend a dollar on a Lotto ticket, you have just as much right to win the prize as anyone else."

Hedwall could not be reached for comment.

But at a news conference in Pueblo with her husband, Thomas, and son, Dustin, Hedwall said she may put the money toward building an indoor riding arena on her property in Lake George. The family owns horses.

Otherwise, "it'll go into the bank with the rest of the money" from her previous jackpot, Hedwall said.

Hedwall actually struck a $4 million prize but chose to take the $1.12 million lump sum instead. After Uncle Sam took 24 percent and the state took back 4 percent, she had a $795,000 check left.

Hedwall had 180 days to claim the prize. But, in an apparent tribute to her big win back on Aug. 5, 1998, she chose to collect Tuesday. On that date, 8, 9, 12, 25, 27 and 28 were drawn on a $10 million grand prize. She took a $4 million lump sum.

The odds of hitting one Lotto jackpot are 1 in 5.2 million. The odds of hitting a second Lotto jackpot are still 1 in 5.2 million.

"You have just as good odds of winning back-to-back as you do of winning one, two, three, four, five or however many in a row," Greco said.

wonder if she played that number for awhile.

The first time she won with a quick-pick ticket.  This time, the numbers she had been playing as far back as she could remember turned out to be the lucky combination, she said in a news release.

here's the link i forgot to include in the above post...it's off the same website as the Colorado Lottery link above in Todd's main news article but the page mentions the exact type numbers she used ie. qp vs her own selections

It's too bad some of these  big jacpot winners don't give some away.to people who have very little, I don't mean groups/ like bill gates does, there are a lot of people needing help, not much, maybe to pay a bill. or food. or shelter., and here in the USA.  maybe they don't realize they can't take it with them, and never would live long enough to use all up.  just wondering  if people like her putting it in banks, could rott like the bible says. I guess she must have some way or system to do 2 times> THERE ARE many big winners today but don't hear of any free gifting to  others . maybe someday all the jackpot winners will share the wealth.........good thoughts

luckycat,

you are right.  "alot" of people by nature are selfish. i don't believe that anybody who has been given the gift of wealth either via the lottery or other means are meant to keep it all to themselves.  but the practice of "giving" should be done BEFORE a person becomes wealthy, not just after.

you cited the bible and so will i.  it says "if you sow sparingly,  you will reap sparingly".  that verse underlines what a person finds at the end of selfishness........SELF.  it's  not about giving money to get money so much as it is about living a greatful life. and one of those ways of showing greatfulness is to be self-less.

the bible also says that "of MUCH is given,  much will be required". that just means that along with a gift of that magnitude,  there is a certain responsibility that goes along with it.  again that of selflessness.

having lived thru somewhat difficult circumstances for a number of years,  it has created an indeliable mark on me.  one that will ALWAYS remind me of where i have come from,  and to make sure that i bless those around me as God see's fit BUT i will  do it on my terms and not everyone around me who solicits my help.  it's not up to me to right all the "wrongs" of life,  that's God's job.    what IS up to me is to obey the dispersement "orders" i have been given.

the best "disbursement" is one done under the cloak of anonymity.

in other words........I AM READY...

are u saying u help others without them asking? sometimes asking is deploriable to the needy.maybe to wake the rich help them they have to ask or solicit their needs because the rich have become blind. animity is great if placed in deep valleys, my opinion too many poor people in america. the rich get richer and ther poor get poorer.feed our americans without the red tape, just to get food ect.is a hassel in america. also I have seen/ noted/people asking the rich for minor help/and have been ignored totally. if I ever won the lottery I would give most of it away to the guy under the bridge/in the cardboard box/ort the food (not)like it is here/really give meals everyday not just on xmas or thanksgiving  like america does here/ what happens to maybe giving that 1 person a home to live in/ a job/ something to grab on to and restart. one cannot live on 1 meal 1 ot 2 times a yr. what about the diginity of that person?  oh well this all started about the rich putting their $ in banks instead of helping others.too many jackpot winners now and all a like u said selfish..... sound off 123

Have you ever thought that just maybe God was rewarding some of the lottery winners for good deeds they had already done?  Even Jesus had to admit that the poor and needy will always be around.  No amount of money will change that, so lottery winners shouldn't waste time worrying about it.

some he rewards and some are for other reasons that fits his plan.

as far as the comment made by Jesus, like i said,  it won't be up to me to right ALL the wrongs in life around me.  that's God's job. my job description will be to fulfill the requests that he makes of me,  not what others "think"  that i should do.

as for me,  i will ALWAYS maintain that even though i am not perfect,  i have followed his authority/plan for many years.  what i will maintain and what is the correct interpretation is not because i have been a faithful/good little boy that i have won,  it's simply because it fits into the plan that he has for my life for reasons that only he ultimately knows.  doesn't mean that he likes me better than anyone else or i have been "worthy".  it is just the way my life is supposed to go.  nothing more and nothingless.  that strips the arrogant factor and puts me firmly on equal playing ground with every other human being. rich or poor

money and the amount thereof makes a poor barometer of "success".

Why would you think that God has anything to do with winning the lottery? There are organizations, governments, people in the world who has trillions of dollars. There is more than enough food, supplies, and money to eradicate poverty and world hunger. Why place the responsibility on the shoulders of lottery winners? I am sure that most of the people on this forum has more money than they actually need, why don't you give it the the needy? Take all the money you spend on internet access, computers, lottery tickets, movies, cable and give it to the poor. Until you do that, don't judge lottery winners.
