Pennsylvania Lottery: Hundreds split lottery winnings on popular number comboThe Pennsylvania Lottery either made a lot of people happy Friday night or reminded them that learning to share is still one of life's toughest lessons.
For the first time since its inception in 1992, the CASH 5 game was won by a set of numbers that an elementary school kid would love -- 5, 10, 15, 20, 25.
Exactly 242 tickets were sold for that combination, meaning each one is worth $439 each. While that's a nice return on a $1 investment, it looks pretty paltry compared to the $446,373.50 jackpot that one player who had the right ticket on Thursday is slated to take home.
"It's obviously a pretty popular combination," said lottery spokesman Steve Kniley, who noted that every once in awhile the staff puts out press releases to try to warn people that certain number patterns are likely to draw crowds.
Lottery officials calculated the pool of Friday night winners as the largest for a single CASH 5 drawing in the game's history. The total jackpot for the night's game was $106,238.
Another 402 players matched four of the five numbers to win $110.50 each, 6,269 players matched three numbers for a $7.50 prize and 56,593 tickets had two matching numbers making them worth one dollar.
According to the lottery's Web site, the largest single CASH 5 prize ever won was $1 million in March 1996, and six winning tickets got to split a $1.59 million haul in September 1995.
