Powerball: Birthdays Yield $100,000 Lottery Win After Ticket Rescued From TrashWhen Daniel Brooks, Jr., a HVAC Technician from Shelbyville, Tennessee, purchased his $100,000 winning Powerball ticket, he did so by choosing numbers that were all birthdays and ages of his family members. When he and wife Robin came into the Nashville district office on Thursday to claim their prize, they brought their children so the family could experience the big dvent together.
Brooks purchased his winning ticket in late April at the Han-D-Food Market, located at 1629 Bradyville Road in Murfreesboro. He chose to purchase a multi-draw ticket, meaning that his one ticket with his one set of chosen numbers was good for multiple Powerball drawings. He purchased his multi-draw ticket for five draws, and won on his third. His ticket is still valid for the next two Powerball drawings.
After watching the numbers drawn on May 5, Mr. Brooks said he had a hunch the numbers were similar to those he had chosen. When he went to find his ticket, he discovered that Robin, not realizing the ticket was a multi-draw ticket, had already thrown it away! Luckily, it was in a trash can that we rarely ever use, so we were able to easily get it out, said Robin.
With his ticket safely back in his hands, he telephoned his mother to double check the numbers drawn that night. His mother confirmed that he had indeed predicted the first five numbers of the drawing correctly winning the Brooks family the $100,000 prize.
Daniel and Robin Brooks said they dont know exactly what they will do with their entire prize, but that they plan to use some of it to pay off the loan on their family car, as well as some other bills.
Along with the Brooks $100,000 ticket, there were 85,558 additional winners from Wednesday nights Powerball drawing who purchased tickets from Tennessee Lottery retailers. The jackpot for Saturdays drawing is estimated at $205 million.
As with all Tennessee Lottery games, profits from Powerball tickets sold in Tennessee remain in the state and go to fund education programs. Most immediately, the Lottery is charged with raising at least $88 million by July 1 in order to fund scholarships for an estimated 65,000 students expected to attend Tennessee colleges and universities in the fall.
