Mega Millions

In a press conference to be held Friday, July 9, 2004 at 11:30 AM, the Massachusetts Lottery will present the winner of the record $294 million Mega Millions jackpot with a ceremonial check.

Massachusetts State Treasurer and Lottery Chairman Timothy P. Cahill will introduce the winner and present the check.  The winner's identity will be revealed at the press conference.

The $294 million jackpot from the Friday, July 2, 2004 Mega Millions drawing, was the result of 15 consecutive jackpot rollovers.  The Mega Millions jackpot starts at $10 million and grows ("rolls over") each time there is no winner.

The winner can accept the prize of $294 million in 26 annual annuity payments (approximately $11 million before taxes annually), or a single lump-sum payment of $117 million after taxes.

The press conference is to be held at Massachusetts Lottery Headquarters in Braintree.

The winning numbers drawn were 10-25-38-39-50, and the Mega Ball was 12.

Why is the prize comparison listed as BEFORE witholdings for annuity, but AFTER for lump sum?

Some sly propaganda to make the lump sum look less attractive, I would guess.

I hope the winner's last name isn't "Bulger".
