Mega MillionsMega Millions: Winning Mega Millions lottery ticket sold in N.Y.

A single ticket sold in Staten Island, New York, has matched the winning combination in the latest Mega Millions lottery drawing and is worth $10 million.

The Mega Millions jackpot stays at $10 million for Friday's game.

Tuesday's winning ticket had all five lotto numbers plus the Mega Ball.

Thirty-four tickets matched all five lotto numbers but not the Mega Ball: 3 from Georgia, 2 from Illinois, 3 from Maryland, 5 from Michigan, 4 from New Jersey, 6 from New York, 4 from Ohio and 7 from Virginia.  Each ticket is worth $175,000.

Eighteen tickets matched four numbers plus the Mega Ball, and are worth $5,000 each.

The winning numbers from Tuesday night's drawing were eight, 10, 11, 13 and 24.  The Mega Ball number was 46.

Anybody else notice this?  The number of $175,000 winners was WAY more than what was mathematically expected.  The probability of there being 34 winners is given a good approximation by the Poisson distribution formula.

260,317 * 43 = 11,193,631 tickets sold.  So n = 11,193,631

n*p = (11,193,631/2,649,920) = 4.224 expected number of winners.

So the probability of there being 34 winners is: ((4.224)^34 * e^-4.224)/34!

which is 9.3323 * 10^-20 or 0.000000000000000000093323

It appears we have just witnessed the impossible!
