Powerball: Lottery lunch ladies still humble a year after jackpot winIt's been a year since the Holdingford, Minnesota lunch ladies struck the jackpot, literally, and they remain celebrities among school food service workers. But they're also still humble.
Four of the 16 Holdingford schools employees who won half of a $190 million Powerball prize spoke Tuesday about being instant millionaires at the Minnesota School Food Service Association conference here.
While they told of the new vehicles and other items they bought, the women still seemed humbled by the experience. They still clip coupons and shop at Goodwill.
"You can have all the money in the world, but if you can slip out of bed and put your feet on the ground without going to the doctor, you've got it made," Karen Overman of Avon said.
Sandy Nelson, an elementary cook manager for the Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan School District listened to every detail. Nelson met Overman before she won the Powerball. She beamed when talking about "such a great group of people."
"They're such basic people, like most of us, like all cooks," Nelson said. "I know if I would win, I'd be the same way."
The Holdingford lunch ladies drew the names of three audience members for Powerball tickets for today's drawing.
"If you win, remember who bought them for you," Overman said.
