Mass. Lottery rolls out new game

Sep. 10, 2004, 1:43 p.m.

Massachusetts Lottery Massachusetts Lottery: Mass. Lottery rolls out new game

CASH Winfall To Replace 17-Year-Old Mass Millions Game

It's out with the old and in with the new at the Massachusetts Lottery.

The lottery retired the 17-year-old Mass Millions game after Thursday night's drawing.  Mass Millions will be replaced by the new $2 CASH WinFall game, which will be drawn Monday and Thursday nights.

Over the course of its life, Mass Millions earned the lottery $1 billion, of which $543 million went to cities and towns.  However sales of the tickets have been going down.

Lottery Director Joseph Sullivan said Mass Millions sales dropped from a high of $139 million in 1994 to $60 million last year.

It's better than Mass Millions, but for $2 it doesn't seem worth playing except on "Winfall" drawing days.  The 1 in 800 odds of winning $150 compare favorably to mega millions 1 in 833 chance at winning $10, but you have to bear in mind you are paying twice as much to get those odds.  To me it would be more "fun" to buy 2 mega millions tickets going for a lot more money. Plus this game gives a free ticket for 2/6, which shows what a ripoff Mass Millions' 3/6 free ticket was - I'm pissed off enough not to want to reward the s***bags who could have easily changed MM years ago to a similar 2/6 and 3/6 payoff but chose not to.

If anyone plans on playing this regularly, please post how good your luck is.

The real problem with Mass Millions was the refusal to offer winners a cash option.

That certainly didn't help. And added to the much more attractive Mega Millions payoffs with cash option and people tiring of a game where it was so hard to win any cash prize at all, where the jackpot went over a year at a time without a winner, people just got fed up with it.  Another problem with Mass Millions was that it was exactly like Megabucks - only harder to win! There's an advertising slogan for you. So people who wanted a big jackpot went to Mega Millions, and people who wanted better odds (for about the same size jackpots) went to Megabucks.

i think the annuity-only feature was not a good idea, and the fact that the annuities were only for 20 years wasn't a good idea either.  they really should have extended the annuity period so they could advertise bigger jackpots.  another idea would be to not offer free bets.  if the lotteries were trying to stop compulsive gambling, then a free bet is not the way.  a small cash prize, such as $2-3 would be a better idea.

I've redone my website.  Go to www.dr-ew.com.  I kept a lot of the old stuff, and I've added some new stuff.  Look for more new stuff in the coming weeks.
