PowerballPowerball: Record Powerball lottery winner's house burglarized

Three men burglarized the home of Jack Whittaker, winner of the biggest lottery jackpot in U.S. history, as an acquaintance of Whittaker's lay dead inside, police said Tuesday.

Whittaker was not home at the time, and Chief Deputy John Dailey said the death of Jesse Joe Tribble, 18, was not related to the burglary and was not a homicide. It may have been drug-related, Dailey said.

"We're pretty sure they knew he was dead. That's why they went inside and took the stuff," Dailey said.

The break-in took place Thursday night or Friday morning. One of those arrested reported Tribble's death late Friday morning, Dailey said. Tribble was a friend of Whittaker's granddaughter, and all three suspects were acquainted with Tribble.

Dailey would not say how the three knew about Tribble's death.

J.C. Shaver, 20, James Travis Willis, 25, and Jeffrey Dustin Campbell, 20, were charged with larceny and other offenses after being captured on a security camera that Whittaker recently had installed, authorities said.

Police recovered $15,000 worth of items taken from the home, Daily said. He did not give a total for everything stolen.

Whittaker won the largest single jackpot in the nation's history when he hit a $314.9 million Powerball jackpot on Christmas Day 2002. He chose to accept a lump sum of about $113 million after taxes.

Since then, Whittaker's vehicle, business and home have been broken into repeatedly. Last year, a strip club manager and his girlfriend were charged with drugging Whittaker and stealing a briefcase containing more than $500,000 in cash and cashier's checks. The money was recovered.

at least he was on the good side of the law this time.

I've redone my website.  Go to www.dr-ew.com.  I kept a lot of the old stuff, and I've added some new stuff.  Look for more new stuff in the coming weeks.

He should have put all of the winnings in the bank & just use a check book. Instead of helping a druggie, He should have helped the homeless.                                                  Skeeda

Just one more reason to place the money in a trust and have the lawyer show up to claim the prize for you. If I ever win all they will see of me is my name, and that's if I have to give them that piece of info.

You don't have to claim your money under your personal name if you establish a trust. You claim it under the trust's name. That's the way to go when you win a lot of money. It's just who has the patience to do it, when you have millions of dollars waiting for you.

Again with the saying a fool and their Money...

I have nothing to say about the druggie...

If you are well off and influencial, you SHOULD surround yourself with the same type of people... that way you go to the top of the ladder and not the bottom.

Everytime I read a Jack sprat whitty story I weep. All I can think is why did this baffoon win. There are so many things I could have done with that kind of money. :|

I allowed a homeless person to move in with me and I lost everything when some of his friends robbed me. On the good side, his parents felt sorry for him and dventually gave him a house. In the meanwhile, my parents died and so did my brother. We apparently exchanged places. Now, I'm homeless and looking for good work so I can get back on my feet. Ironic, I should have old Jack's problems. He'd better watch it; if you hang out with sh**, you get dirty.

Jack's problems aren't caused by winning $117 million, they are caused by Jack being Jack.  If you let an 18 year old druggie move in with you, if you bring $500,000 to a strip club, if you leave $100,000 in your car, if you drink too much, you have to expect trouble will follow.  And trouble did follow, but there are many other multimillionaires who don't have Jack's troubles because they don't do the things Jack does to attract it.
