Because that way the lottery only gives free tickets to the people who actually buy 5 games. If they gave a free ticket to an individual who buys 5 games on 5 different tickets they'd be giving free tickets to retailers who sold 5 tickets to 5 different people.

Maryland actually did better than should be expected if those numbers are accurate. Just under 4.01% of tickets were sold in MD, but the $150 winners in MD amount to a hair over 4.35% of the total winners. Of course that's well within the range of what shoud be expected from a random distribution.

FWIW, NY had 367 winners, which is 14.9% of the total, but bought 15.7% of the tickets.

My answer can go for both of your threads this one and the powerball one, but I've won more when I've chosen my own numbers and they have had muiltiple lines. Usually, three or four lines. However, I don't think how many lines I play has any bearing on if I win or not.

There are winners every 31 days on average for the past few years. When I see how many winners there are, I think to myself that the odds of 175+million to 1 aren't so bad if there are winners almost every month. Then reality hits and the odds of 175 million to 1 seems pretty snip never impossible for ME to hit. It only happens to other people...Lol.

Not using any software. I take each jackpot lottery seperately. I download the history of the winning numbers for a given lottery via cut paste to an excel spreadsheet. The initial setup or workup is a real pain - usually takes about 20 hours to do the initial set up. But once that is done, it only takes about 30 sec to update. This has been discussed so many times. Simply put, the structure of the games are different. With Mega Millions, the jackpot is paid in 26 installments, each of which are the same amount. With Powerball, the jackpot is paid in 30 installments, with the installments gradually increasing each year.

If you look at the jackpot history page for Powerball, it's rollovers have been quite a bit bigger than they normally have, just as Mega Millions's rollovers have been bigger. Tonight it rolled over $19M and the last rollover was $17M. I think both games will be having bigger rollovers and bigger jackpots.

A few years back Ohio had Super Lotto (6/49+1) with a starting jackpot of $4M and rollovers of $2M. It got too expensive to fund when out of state players stop playing so Ohio came out with an improvement Lot'O Play with $2 tickets and a smaller jackpot. I set a limit of 10 bucks on Mega 5 games on Numbers I pick and 5 on QP's. If you follow the Jackpot winners many of them buy 1 to five impulse tickets and win. I also buy pick 3 numbers 1 buck straight and 50 cents boxed. If I hit it straight I get 540 bucks for the straight and boxed tickets if I hit it boxed I win 40 bucks for my 50 cents. I do fairly well there. So I'll only be playing 20 bucks for Powerball with power play. Hope you have lots of Luck with MM.

I like to pick my numbers using a special RNG that I wrote myself. It loads the file containing all the past winners of the game I'm playing and pick only combinations within the parameters I choose so I can avoid playing combinations that have already won. Even when I don't play, I can practice picking combinations and checking the results so I have a plan when I do play.
