Mega Millions multi-state lottery to get harder to win in Oct.
I can tell you one person that will be dropping off after the change. I swear the MM is beginning to sound more and more like a government run operation. Pay more for less of a chance to get anything. Now who's the sucker?

Cant you just give cash to avoid the gift taxes on the receipients??
It just depends on how they spend the cash you would give them. If all of a sudden they are putting a large amount of cash in the bank or on a brand new car it could be a problem. Anything over $10,000 in cash being deposited is reported to the government.

Record Powerball jackpot won by 1 ticket
From what I understand, MUSL invests lottery money in low risk more secure investments, like US Government Bonds and not higher risk like the one made by Madoff or Enron. Remember, they invest the whole lump sum and with that and the interest they made, they only give you little by little each year for 30 years. So, they have plenty of time to meet their obligation.

What would you invest in?
Most of it would be saving, CD and US Government Bonds. May be 5% or less for higher risk investment like stock markets. If I have more than enough money for the rest of my life, I don't care if the money doesn't grow or grow very little.

PB simulator
The ruling rich elite moguls. They dictate oil prices, and many other areas of banking, money lending families to governments for wars and black projects. I won't list any names. You already know who they are.

$600 MILLION: Biggest Powerball jackpot ever
The Federal tax obligation alone is almost $150 million! some folks out there will still think that is not enough of their fair share. Our beloved Government will burn through that amount in 20 minutes.

Annuity or Lump Sum?
I don't really agree. Your contract is with the lottery, the government, not whatever security they invested in. So even if that goes bust, you'll still get the money from the government. IF something happens to the US government then your lumpsum amount would've probably been affected as well. It'd be like the end of the world anyway. And I don't think taxes will go up and up non-stop. But who knows.

If you can choose to give up your winnings in exchange for being never hungry or homeless...
That's a really good point, whiteballz. Another point if you think about it, is that the government is robbing your money by deducting 25% right away. Let's say your lumpsum amount is 100,000,000 for the sake of simplicity and that you can get a 5% interest and won on jan 1st. The government deducts 25%, which is 25,000,000. If you kept that 25 million and invested it until the end of the year, you'd've earned 1,250,000 in interest. Of course, that income would be taxed. Nor ...

If you can choose to give up your winnings in exchange for being never hungry or homeless...
OK a little fact checking here. I hate to interupt rdgrnr with facts but Catholic Charities also gets government funding, whether we like it or not. Actually Catholic Charities recieved more money from the federal government (2.2 billion in 2010), through the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, than the Corporation of Public Broadcasting recieved (455 million 2012) in total from the feds. The salvation army also gets gov't money from the same office. Giving money ...
