Kansas Lottery officials mull GTECH systems failure
Kansas Lottery officials already had more than their hands full with the selection of gaming license applicants for their four casinos so they really didn't need another problem. But, there it is: a casino data systems failure from GTECH, the Providence-RI-based firm that manages the state's lottery activities. It was defective software, pure and simple, said Ed Van Petten, lottery executive director, in describing the systems failure. GTECH, a former publicly-traded American company, was ...

Pick 3 numbers in Kansas Lottery misreported
The Kansas Lottery says it misreported Pick 3 numbers for three dates because of a software glitch. But it says it will pay players who picked the misreported numbers, as well as those with the correct winning numbers. Lottery officials say the wrong numbers were reported Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. They say the random number generator used for Pick 3 drawings functioned properly, but the winning numbers reported to the public were not the numbers drawn. Kansas Lottery Executive Directo ...

Employee lottery pool wins on first ticket
Talk about instant gratification the first time the 23 people on the night shift at the Sherwin-Williams plant in Andover, Kansas, decided to pool money and buy Powerball tickets, the first ticket they bought proved to be a winner. A $200,000 winner, which means it matched the first five numbers drawn Jan. 5 but not the Powerball. It was a shocker, said Paula Norton of El Dorado, who goes by Joan and was the designated ticket-buyer for the group. We're all a bunch of happy people. Eve ...

Kansas Lottery surpasses $1 billion mark in profits for the state
The Kansas Lottery has banked its first $1 billion while also marking its 20th anniversary. At ceremonies Friday in Topeka, director Ed Van Petten said sales revenue transferred to the state treasury on Thursday pushed the game's all-time profits over the $1 billion mark. We are thrilled to tell you that the lottery has reached another milestone, he said. The second billion won't take nearly as long after Kansas' state-owned numbers game morphs into state-owned casino operator under a ...

Richard Bastemeyer of Lawrence on Friday won his second $25,000 Kansas Lottery prize in three months. I could use more Fridays like this, Bastemeyer said. He won the $25,000 on a $5 Casino Riches scratch-off ticket. On July 6, he won another $25,000 on a $5 American Idol scratch ticket. Bastemeyer, who works for Hamm's Inc., said he stopped at the Kwik Shop at 3440 W. Sixth St., on his way to work Friday. It's my usual routine. Wichita Man Claims 2nd Lottery Prize in 2 months
Lightning did strike twice for a Wichita man, at least when it comes to Kansas lottery games. Two months ago, Larry McDaniel-Sheets purchased a $2 Bonus Crossword ticket at the C C Store in Wichita, winning a $20,000 top prize. Last Friday afternoon, much to his disbelief, McDaniel-Sheets purchased a $2 The Duke instant scratch ticket at the same location, winning another top prize of $10,000. I never thought something like this would ever happen again, smiled McDaniel-Sheets. That mu ...

Kansas woman wins $12.9 million Hot Lotto jackpot
When Lori Boyle stopped Wednesday to get gas and check on a lottery ticket, she had no idea she would walk out of the store a multimillionaire. The 42-year-old mother of two daughters, ages 19 and 13, had bought the Hot Lotto ticket July 4 in her hometown of Independence, but had kept the ticket in her purse without realizing the $12.9 million jackpot had been hit in Kansas. I'm too busy to watch television much and I usually only look at the newspaper to see who died and who had a baby, ...

TV station reports on the Kansas Lottery
Some say it's harmless entertainment. Others say it can lead to a dangerous addiction. Some say its a simple way to raise millions for important state programs. Others say it's a game that takes advantage of the poor. But, however you feel about the Lottery it's here to stay. The old adage, 'it's not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game' does not apply here. Tony Trotter says he's been playing the lottery for years. I figure somebody has got to win somebody's got to wi ...
