State lotteries get creative to drive higher sales
The Arizona Lottery has spent four years ramping up efforts to get players to part with a dollar. It raised its average jackpot by 8 percent and introduced pricier scratch-off games that cost from $5 to $20 but yield bigger winnings, up to $1 million. The tickets now come in brighter colors on thicker paper, and more of them get displayed in bigger cases to catch the eyes of would-be winners lining up at grocery and convenience stores. The lottery also increased its advertising budget by roug ...

Millions in lottery jackpots expire every year
If you are the ticket holder for the winning Massachusetts Mega Millions consolation prize with the numbers: 2, 7, 10, 16 and 29, we have some bad news for you. You have just missed your chance to claim $250,000. The jackpot expired Wednesday. In six more days, on Aug. 3, a $900,000 jackpot is in danger of becoming little more than wishful thinking for some unlucky winner in Florida. ABC News have found at least six other jackpots ranging from $10,000 (two in Arizona expiring Aug. 8 and Au ...

Assemblywoman wants N.J. lottery drawings back on TV
New Jersey Assemblywoman Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-Mercer) announced today she will introduce a bill requiring NJTV to broadcast the New Jersey lottery drawings. Since July 1, the New Jersey Lottery has been streaming its daily lottery drawings only on its Web site and on its Facebook page. Watson Coleman wants the drawing to be available on the state's public television network. NJTV is the private nonprofit that replaced New Jersey Network earlier this month. Not everyone owns or has ...

Some not pleased with N.J. Lottery Internet drawing broadcast
But move to Web might eventually broaden the number of TV stations to carry live draws It doesn't matter what changes: any time a change occurs at the lottery, there are some who won't like it. Genevieve Tappan has played the New Jersey Lottery for more than 40 years, but hasn't bought a ticket since Saturday, when she realized the nightly drawings were no longer being televised. I like to see them pull it so they don't have the chance to switch it, said Tappan, 80, of East Orange. Old ...

Store owner killed for $3 of lottery tickets
Felony murder charges have been filed against a man accused in the dragging death of a northern New Jersey gas station owner, who authorities say was killed over the alleged theft of a few dollars worth of lottery tickets. Bail was set Sunday at $750,000 for 34-year-old Ronnie Fedo of Lake Hopatcong. U.S. lawmaker hits the lottery
Lady Luck smiled on a few House members last year. New Jersey Rep. Frank Pallone claimed nearly $25,000 in lottery winnings in 2010, according to the latest yearly disclosure forms filed with the House of Representatives. Likewise, Rep. Dave Reichert, a Washington state Republican, won somewhere in the range $200 to $1,000 during a trip to the Snoqualmie Casino outside Seattle. Mr. Pallone, a Democrat, owes his haul to his dad. The congressman and his brother pool their money with their ...

N.J. paper investigates best and worst places to buy lottery tickets
This is not a lucky number: 07102. And yet lottery players line up every day at a convenience store register in this Newark ZIP code. They bring their hopes, dreams and dollars and trade them for games. Hopefuls mill about the Welsh Farms store on Court Street, thumbing through small pieces of paper inscribed with names like Pick 3, Pick 4 and Jersey Cash 5. Some stand against the brick wall outside, feverishly scraping quarters crusted with silver dust across instant-win scratch-off games ...

N.J. casino loses more than $11M to two gamblers
They say the house always wins. But for one Atlantic City casino, that doesn't seem to have been the case lately. In April, a blackjack player raked in $5.8 million at the Tropicana Casino and Resort. Then last week, a different man took home $5.3 million after his own amazing run of luck at the Tropicana. The Tropicana may have been the author of its own misfortune. It's deliberately put an emphasis on high-stakes games, under the theory that it'll come out a winner in the end. And casino ...
