Lotteries across the country are struggling to remain competitive, retaining their players while increasing their bottom lines. Last year, 25 U.S. lotteries reported increased sales, but New York's lottery was one of six that had higher profits.

N.J. Lottery breaks weekly sales record
The New Jersey Lottery today announced that it had a record-breaking week for instant-ticket sales at the end of 2006. Lottery officials said $28,563,561 worth of 'scratch-off' tickets were sold from December 21-27.
The previous record for one week of sales was $26.9 million December 22 thorugh 28, 2005. Total lottery sales for fiscal 2006 was also a record $2.4 billion.

NJ Lottery New Year's raffle results drawn
The New Jersey Lottery selected the winning numbers Sunday for its special Million Dollar New Year drawing.
Only 500,000 tickets costing $20 each were sold for the raffle. That gave contestants a 1-in-125,000 chance of winning one of the $1 million prizes.
The winning numbers for the $1 million prizes were 040063, 168140, 265354 and 278146.
Numbers were also selected for other prizes ranging from $500 to $100,000, officials said.

The New Jersey Lottery is offering a special New Year's drawing in which a limited amount of tickets will be sold for four $1 million prizes.
