Texas lottery winner invests in unusual historical motel
A bit of American history quirky and curious, but history nonetheless huddles next to old U.S. 59, past the tractor dealers and the rice mills, just before a green sign that proclaims Wharton's population of 9,237. It's easy to miss. But it is there, just around the bend: a row of 10 freshly painted, sand-colored tepees. As in the Tee Pee Motel, a throwback to the 1940s and '50s, when taking a drive was still in style and roadside businesses used gimmicky architecture like a gas stat ...

Is the lottery shortchanging schools?
According to the North American Assoc. of State and Provincial Lotteries, 42 states and the District of Columbia run lotteries, and more than half claim the games boost funding for education. But CBS News chief investigative correspondent Armen Keteyian found that lotteries aren't exactly providing a windfall for schools. If you listen to state lottery ads, we're supposed to believe that all the numbers are supposedly adding up to more and more money for education. Lotteries help, but n ...

Largest Texas Lottery jackpot claimed by trust
The winners of the largest Mega Millions jackpot ever won on a ticket sold in Texas have stepped forward to collect their prize money. A partnership calling itself the H H Trust of Dallas claimed the $128 million jackpot from the July 6 drawing on the multistate game, the Texas Lottery Commission says. We were daydreaming about winning the lottery and taking some time off, one member of the trust, which collected its winnings July 18, said in a news release provided by the commission. ...

Texas Lottery may consider offering raffle
The chairman of the Texas Lottery Commission has asked the state attorney general to study whether it would be legal to add a raffle to its array of games. Raffles offer better odds of winning than other kinds of games because a limited number of tickets are sold and there can be no duplicate winners. Twenty-seven states already offer raffles with mixed success. Lottery spokesman Bobby Heith said the commission would still have to research the idea before starting a raffle game. But offici ...

It's been a lucky few weeks for a Texas soldier serving in Iraq. He won part of a $12 million dollar Lotto Texas jackpot, and now he's home. Tyler man wins $1 million Texas Lottery jackpot
A Tyler man is a little richer after winning $1 million in the Texas Lottery. Ralph Hilts, a custodian at Lindale Independent School District, originally won $50 playing a scratch-off card, but instead of stopping he spent the money he won on a ticket for the $130 Million Spectacular - which he also won. I scratched the ticket with a quarter and I thought to myself I'd won something, he said. I asked the clerk to run it through his terminal and the message came up that the cashing limit ...

The Travis County district attorney's office confirmed Tuesday that it has launched a criminal investigation after an allegation that someone affiliated with the Texas Lottery Commission may have solicited kickbacks from a financial planning firm that helped some Lotto Texas winners manage their money. West Virginia resisting trend to privatize Lottery
About a dozen states are flirting with the idea of selling their lotteries to private companies to help plug financial gaps in their budgets. But West Virginia officials say they so far have not seriously considered such an initiative, which would privatize the state lottery in exchange for quick cash. California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, for instance, wants to sell the Golden State's lottery to bring in as much as $37 billion. Under Schwarzenegger's plan, the state lottery would be leas ...
