Hi, Coin Toss, the only way this information would be useful to me would be if you could provide the percentage of total plays for a draw were quick picks.  The general population, at least I think, play exclusively quick picks.  Some will play birthdays, lucky numbers, etc., but for the most part people just walk into a store and slap down a five dollar bill (or whatever) and ask for quick picks.  So, by saying that a majority of the IL Little lotto draws are won by quick picks really doesn't prove anything or provide any kind of useful information, does it?  Am I missing something?

Hey there Texas MadMan

Well, personally I feel that the info. is useful if this is the game someone is going to play.

I'm also using it as a model because there is a drawing everyday (and evidently a winner every 2.7 days).

For all the discussions we heave her about quick picks vs people picking their own numbers, I'd like to see a bunch of people all pick a game and track it, so we'd have this kind of input from at least a dozen games. But I'm prety sure the results would be very similar to this one. The lotery websites that do track the winners tell us 70 to 80 % of ticket sales are QPs, as are 70 to 80% of the jackpot winners.

From the Powerball FAQ page:

WHICH HAS THE BETTER CHANCE OF WINNING: COMPUTER PICKS OR PLAYER PICKS?

About 70% to 80% of purchases are computer picks. About 70% to 80%of winners are computer picks. Perhaps just one of those weirdcoincidences?

I do thik there are some people who won't track a game like this because they're pretty sure they're not going to like what the results tell them re: QP vs pickoing your own numbers.

The ods on this game are 575, 757 to 1 to hit all 5 numbers drawn (of 39). If there was a sysytem out there it would certainly do better on this game than on a 5 + 1 game with odds over 140 million or over 176 million to 1 against hitting it solid.

When I started tracking this I leaned towards more QPs winning than not, but didn't think it would be at this rate.

Here's tonight's:

LITTLE LOTTO PRIZE PAYOUTS FOR SATURDAY, JUNE 21, 2008

WINNING NUMBERS: 08 - 09 - 17 - 19 - 20

PLAYERS MATCHING 5 OF 5 NUMBERS
    INCLUDING SUBSCRIPTION WINNERS            1
 EACH PLAYER WILL RECEIVE           $175,000.00

       WINNING TICKETS WERE SOLD AT

       166876    GAS EXPRESS                (QP)
                 501 W 31ST STREET
                 CHICAGO/60616

To date

65 Jackpots

55 QPs

32 PS

Of the 65 jackpots, including shared jackpts, 84.6% were won with a QP

49.2% with player numbers (PS I call it, player selected)

Of 87 winners, 55 or 63.2% played quick picks.

Like anything else, we can have all the opinions we want, but can't refute results.

I look at hitting any jackpot game as asking to be struck by lightning, with the assistance of the Lottery Fairy no less.

That being the case, since what we're seeing here tells us that the person whom plays a QP is more likely to win a jackpot, why not go with the percentages?

YMMV (Your mileage may vary)

If you go to the Florida web site, there are many downloads.  One of them shows the number of QPs vs the number of self-picks that won.  However, as Texas MM wrote, if we don't know the number of QPs purchased, analyzing the data doesn't result in a definitive conclusion.

I agree that your chances of winning are just as good if you buy a QP because the lottery is random and unpredictable (I hope)   However, there have been many large jackpots won with self-picks.  Then there are stories like this one that seem to make both QPs and Self Picks a losing battle.  Remember the young man who won and never played before? (think it was PB)  Well, here's a local story.

The Florida Lottery announced today that MEGA MONEY™ winner Judy Sandberg, 66, of Naples claimed her share of the June 13 $1.6 million MEGA MONEY jackpot. The other winning ticket, sold in Largo, was claimed earlier this week.

Sandberg chose the one-time, lump-sum payment option for her winnings in the amount of $539,305.20. She purchased her winning MEGA MONEY ticket from Publix, located at 2450 Vanderbilt Beach Road in Naples. The retailer received a share of the $4,000 bonus incentive for selling the jackpot-winning ticket. The winning numbers were:

13 - 17 - 29 - 38 and the MEGABALL® was 15

Sandberg, a retiree, plays Scratch-Off tickets on occasion but opted for a MEGA MONEY ticket this time instead. "I have unusual luck, and since it was Friday the 13th I thought I'd buy something different."

The next day, before taking her dog on his morning walk, Sandberg checked her numbers in the local newspaper. Not believing she really won, she walked her dog then checked the numbers again. "At first I just thought I had just the MEGABALL®, but as I kept looking I realized I had them all. I couldn't believe it."

And though Sandberg doesn't play Florida Lottery games on a regular basis, this month she had three winning tickets. She cashed in a $600 MILLION HIGH ROLLER this past week when she validated her MEGA MONEY winning ticket at the Lottery's Fort Myers District Office for $1,000. Later that day, on the way home, she stopped at Sweetbay Supermarket in Naples and won $500 with a MEGA GOLD Scratch-Off ticket.

"I like playing Florida Lottery games," Sandberg said at Florida Lottery headquarters during her claims processing. "They're fun and it's my donation to Florida's education system."

Thanks for the input. That story certainly does imply that it really is all up to the Lottery Fairy.

That woman from Naples was certainly on a roll!

Tracking this game thus far and seeing the results seems to tell us the Lottery Fairy is more apt to smile upon those who play a quick pick. (Wonder if that's what she played or not).

From the FL lotto story:

"I have unusual luck, and since it was Friday the 13th I thought I'd buy something different."
