I don't want to sound disrespectful but the OP doesn't seem to know much about Mormons and doesn't seem to know that Utah is a Mormon state. Mormons ABHOR any form of gambling. Even if Utah has tens of millions of populations it won't allow lottery because of the religious conservatism. ambelamba, Yes, but... Mormons don't condone Mormons gambling, but they do have partenrtships in some casinos. (They also tell their people not to drink soda, but they own a soda company). All, While it's true Nevada has a small population, it does get millions of visitors. A Nevada lottery is always a battle with casino interests, which is really ridiculous. The visitors go to Nevada to gamble, and if the casinos offered lottery tickets they'd be playing them, too. The same goes for Mississippi. For states that have casinos not to have lotteries just does not make sense. when the river boat casinos came into being, and gambling expanded beyone Nevada and Atlantic City, it was thought that only Utah, Hawaii, and Tennessee would never get any form of gambling. The reasoning was Utah because of the Mormons, Tennessee because of the Baptists, and Hawaii because of the illegal games - they just don't want the compeition and regulation. Also, Vegas casinos make millions off of the Hawaiin trade. It's Lotto, not horseshoes or artillery! Close doesn't count! I sell everything at a loss but make up for it in volume - Milo Minderbinder, Catch-22 There are two kinds of jackpot winners...the ones who remained anonymous and the ones that wish they had.

If you live in Utah, you can play the Massachusetts lottery. If you do play, let others know so people will see that the state is missing out on revenue.

For the record, the whole soda/caffeinated drinks thing is a myth as is Mormons owning their own "soda company" they might own stock in one, they might even own bottling plants in Utah, but they don't own any actual companies that produce a original product, at least not something widely distributed that I'm aware of. Not that it would matter if they did or not since there isn't really a decree that they should not drink soda. Try to avoid caffeine maybe but there's plenty of caffeine free sodas out there. I'm fairly sure the casino thing is a myth also.
Anyway, yeah Utah would be the last place any sort of State run lottery would have even a remote chance of starting up. I'm sure many of them would even be happy to secede from the US if just so they could get away from the pesky Constitution so they could try and place their own morality down the throats of people who don't disagree with them. DC81 Not to argue, but the casino thing is no myth. After the recession of the early 1980s, Nevada casinos had to go out of state for financing. In that part of the country, that meant Salt Lake City, and of course, that meant Mormons. Casino interests knew that the term gambling wouldn't go over big with Mormon bankers, and that is how gambling became called "gaming". As for the soda thing, well, way back when Joseph Smith had a hang up about hot beverages, and then you're right, that spilled over into caffeine, too. It's Lotto, not horseshoes or artillery! Years ago I went to Utah, checked in the hotel, and went to get dinner. ROFL!! Little did I know that they didn't have beer or liquor of any kind in the state. I ordered my dinner and asked for a Bud. LOL!!! The waitress laughed at me and explained that I was in a dry state. I was young okay? 18-19 years old at the time. I didn't know what a dry state was, I asked that what does rain have to do with beer. If you live in a state such as Utah and a few other states that religion rules, you'll have them dictate to you as to what you can and can't have. Don't get me wrong, I love Utah. I was there before Salt Lake turned and it was wonderful to be able to float in the lake without effort. I went back years later and found the water was diluted and the bottom turned to muck that once was crusted with a thick layer of salt. I don't see things changing in Utah anytime soon for a lottery. Sorry.

"Chick" I used to have the Idaho account for the lottery system provider. You can only run so many games and in a state with a small population like Idaho, its even tougher to have a healthy matrix - good prozes, good roll pattern. You also don't want to kill existing games. Its not as easy as it we would like it to be.

I don't understand, the lottery will at least to go education in that state and help the education in that state or to some charitable or important cause....Is not like beer and cigarettes where beer and cigarettes go to one person getting richer and richer and gambling you don't have to drink or smoke anything... the church has to come to its senses and learn that gambling is good what's bad is liquor and cigarettes...What pisses me off is that they mix lottery gambling with cigarettes and liquor as vices and yet liquor is the number 1 killer the kind of evil, i remember i read a newspaper here in Panama giving you the statistic of drinking and they mentioned 3 pages of it saying how raping young kids have to do with alcohol, a bunch of stuff and car accidents people get shot because of alcohol i think the paper went and say that more people have died worldwide of alcohol than in world war 1...[i just can't remember wish i had a hold of that newpaper] and cigarettes how many people does it kill eventually....While the lottery what harm does the lottery causes, does it kill anyone?...NOPE so it can't be a vice...it doesn't kill anybody and the money goes to education or a worthy cause... Don't worry, they've been trying to work in the video games thing for years and the hardcore righties just introduced a new bill a few days ago that will be nothing more than yet another waste of tax payer dollars due to it being ruled unconstitutional if it passes... casinos and scratchoffs are for people that want money right away and don't have patience to wait for the drawings while the, lottery is for people that want money but have the time/patience to wait for until 11PM for the drawings.... they are two types of different customers/clients.... i remember someone here in LP said that before...
