I was just checking out the Texas lottery web site and I saw a short video on "The Sound of Winners!"
http://www.txlottery.org/export/sites/default/Winners/Sound_of_Winners/
In Texas they have devised a way to make the lottery terminal play an audible sound when a scratch off or on-line ticket is scanned for validation or inquiry. The sound will let you know the status of your scanned ticket depending on whether it is a winning ticket ("We're in the money" sound) or non-winning ticket (raspberry sound). They say that they implemented this audible feature to "help reduce errors, improve communication and minimize confusion for players and retailers".
That would be a good feature for the other states to adopt. There would be no question of whether a ticket is a winner or not... I guess you could call that "improved communication" ?
